I need / want to mod my 17' Husky 125. Some advice?

Hey guys.....here real soon I'm going to tear this thing down for a fresh top end , and while I have her torn down , I am planning on doing some motor mods.

The goal is to get it running about as strong as I can , while running strait VP C12. I don't want to use the Oxygenated fuel ( as it costs a fortune ). So I'm looking at porting at so forth.

I'm looking to get it to run stronger on the mid-top end ( that's where we mostly run these 125's at anyways right? ). I'm curious as to what you guys know about the different head and base gasket thicknesses that Husky / Ktm sell?

Also....I plan on sticking with the FMF power core ( non shorty ) because all the tracks are bigger outdoor stuff....no tight stuff. The Scalvini pipe I have on her now , I love the looks , but I'm going for performance here , so if I need to change that out , I'll keep that in mind.

I'm wondering if any of you have modified any of these newer Husky / Ktm 125 motors , and what your thoughts were on how to go about it? Chuck Davies?.....anyone else? I know Chuck went full bore with a crank and all that stuff.....would like your input too please.

Btw.....Piston size 1 & 2 ?

They give no definition of what this is , or at least what I can find.

My 125 parts are in the way back from Millenium Tech. They ported the head for C12 and overall throttle response and gains, not too crazy. Should be back by the end of the week. I really thought the JD Jet kit was a great inexpensive mod.

I also had the tranny out so I had Yoshimura ISF process it.

You gotta look on your current piston to see if it’s a 1 or 2. After 60 hours I only ran #2 because of cylinder wear. I had Millenium resleve my cylinder and they match it to a #1

Thanks Joe! And I'm no where close to 60hrs , I actually just hit 21hrs on it today. I know I may be rushing it a bit but was planning on tearing it down to do all this between the 25-30hr mark. That sound about right on the timing?

I'm not sure if you've checked the price or not, but C12 is more expensive here than u4.4 and T2. I run u4.4 and it was a noticeable increase in power and throttle response. You will need to rejet for it though, I went up 2 main sizes and a PJ. Well worth it though. The cost difference was about $10 less for a 5gal can. It shows u4.4 is more expensive on VP's site, but it was cheaper at the local dealer. VP's site shows that T2 is $17 less than C12 though.

Yeah 25 is good. I’ve done pistons at 20-25 and they still have some coating on them and compression was pretty good as well.

What’s your email, I’ll send you the service manual. I brought it Kinkos and had them printed out all nice.

I got the tranny all back together by using the manual.

Thanks again Joe! And Vertex was the piston choice I had in mind. Thought about OE or pro-x , but I guess our bikes come stock with the Vertex?

And what do you know about the different base gasket thicknesses? There is a big range. Would you happen to know what thickness is in there stock?

This is a 2018 150. The bottom line is mikuni carb, middle line is the 2016 pwk carb fitted, and top line it makes most power is with the stic insert

Yeah buying from Vertex is the same as OEM but with the deal you save a bunch. #LifeHack

Not the right way to do it, but I measured with a caliper the gaskets that were on the bike and just got a close as I could. If you buy a gasket kit, it's got a ton of options and plenty left over for next time.

That STIC carb mod looks pretty insane, almost +3 HP.

Is that the Keihin with the STIC or the Mikuni?

Sorry, it's the 2016 Kehin carb fitted with the stic that works best.

Watch out for silencer dimensions. The scalvini robs power on the 150, the outlet is much narrower (22.5mm i think) than stock.

I just measured the buds silencer, it's 24mm.

FMF shorty has a 22mm outlet also, i would look for a larger diameter endcap from the full length powercore

Bruce.....to make sure here , the Pwk is the higher performing carb? Because I think I may order the short body from JD jetting today.

I'll be damned. But doesn't the long body silencer's usually put out better top end on bigger tracks then the shorty's?

Also....was this run I run on a stock motor?

Edit.....nevermind the question above. Saw your reply to macz.

The dyno suggests the pwk makes more power. Adding the stic to the pwk should add more power.

These runs were 2018 150, fatty pipe and vforce. I know you've had problems with the vforce, the dyno operator found the vforce added no power, but improved ease of jetting and reliability

Longer silencers usually have a wider outlet, and often you see shorty silencers with a ring welded in or s reduced outlet. I could be wrong, but I think they do this to increase back pressure lost with the shorter silencer. But it can be detrimental to big bores I found.

I just got back from a fuel run during lunch as only one place in town has any VP in stock for some reason this week. To compare prices I have a list.

Dealer 1 (where I normally buy fuel, but out of stock right now)
u4.4 $79.95
C12 $79.95

Dealer 2 (only option to be able to ride this weekend)
u4.4 $94.98
T2 $74.98
C12 $76.98

Jeff, check this out! Its 295 but seems to do a better job of getting air/fuel in the motor so it really improves mid and top performance significantly. There are a couple good threads on thumper talk regarding the product with testing and dyno runs and seat of the pants reviews... it seems to work well!

Thanks Bruce ( and the rest of you guys. Btw....I never had an issue with my Vforce for my 125....it was light years better than the stock reed cage assembly. I had major issues with the Vforce that came for my RM250. It was worse then the stock TC 125 cage .......big gaps. Not sure why the TC 125 Vforce was so nice , and the RM one was so bad?

On this STIC mod......after doing a little research , is this Harris performance , is this Derek Harris that posts here quite often? And damn.......I'll be into a new PWK and metering rod for over $600.00 , but from the sounds of it , it's money well spent. Maybe I'll skip all the porting , and focus on a new top end , along with a modified pwk / stic modded carb.

Thanks AJ. I kind of wanted to stick with C12 , as I like being able to mix my choice of oil. My buddy is a VP dealer , so I can get my fuel at a little above cost. Which helps. But even with that , the oxygenated fuel is out of my price range.

I would head to dealer 2 and pick up as much T2 as possible. Love that stuff. No mixing no messing. Runs amazing in our tc125

The 06 and newer reed cage, spacer and manifold work best on all rm250s imo. It's actually the same parts that came on all 03 to 2018 yz250s

I'm running T2 also in my 18 150. Did you have to jet it a tad richer? I'm running the stock Mikuni right now. Got a FMF shorty silencer and FMF factory fatty. Everything else is stock.

2018 tc125. Factory fatty, fmf shortyy and vforce with a few holes in the side panel.
T2 fuel, one pilot leaner, leanest on the clip and 1 or 2 richer on the pilot. It does need choke sometimes which tells me the pilot is good.

I have never ridden a bike that runs so clean and crisp. My kid is one lucky dude, he had good grades, so I've not managed to confiscate the bike yet lol
