How to Tell if Gas is Mixed

Edited Date/Time 9/19/2021 8:40pm
Found a 5 gallon jug of gas behind some things in my garage and I can't remember if I had mixed it or not. It is AvGas so no ethanol to go bad, I think I filled the AvGas around November of last year.

Pour it out and start over. Not worth the risk unless you know for sure. Just my 2 cents.

I mean color I guess? AVGAS is blue, so if you’re running say red oil and it’s purple, bingo bango you got mix. I wouldn’t chance it though

AvGas 100LL is pure bright blue colored. Any bottle made of PET plastic can hold gas (gatorade bottle, water bottle, etc). Pour a little in a PET bottle so you can see the color easily.

The definitive test for mixed or not is the cardboard test. Pour a small amount of the fuel in question on a clean piece of cardboard and allow it to evaporate fully, about 1-2 minutes. Straight gas will leave no trace while mixed gas will leave an oil stain.

Run it in your 2-stroke and see if the engine blows up. If it seizes, that was straight gas. LaughingLaughingTongue

The only true way to tell is to take a long, deep breath of it through your nose… I mean really get it all up in your sinuses, hold that breath for about 15 seconds then exhale slowly. Then take a quick sip of it, gargle and spit, then one more sip and swallow it, pre mixed goes down smooth and non mixed tastes like gasoline.
