Is there a way to ID the 05 or 06 RM250 cyl's. with out having to pull the jug off ? If not, what are the differences to look for with the jug off ?

I'm fairly certainly after owning probably every RM250 from the 80's up my last 07 that the 05 and 06 cylinder are the same but the 06 felt stronger off of the bottom if I remember so maybe it had slightly different porting or an ignition.

Digger - Suzuki did make changes from the 05 to 06 cyl. & also changed the ign. mapping. Hoping to find a way to ID the cyl. with out taking it off.

I remember reading this MXA article in 2006.

(1) Exhaust ports. Last year Suzuki raised the corners of the exhaust port and widened the boost ports to get a little more top-end overrev. This year they reshaped the exhaust port, advanced the port timing and optimized the boost ports. They didn’t undo what they did in 2005, but went for a middle-of-the-road porting strategy.

(2) Power valve. Suzuki altered their power valve to delay its opening momentarily to help the low-end power. Then, they sealed up the sub exhaust valve ports to cut down on blow-by and worked on the cam rod, valve arm and valve linkage for quicker actuation.

(3) Carb intake. By shortening the carb intake pipe, they cut down on lag time for increased low-end.

(4) Crankcase volume. A two-stroke engine is a pump, and the crankcase is the pump’s diaphragm. By changing crankcase volume, you can increase or decrease pumping pressure, fuel flow or fuel density. For 2006, Suzuki increased the clearance between the crankshaft and crankcase to increase crankcase volume and change the primary compression ratio of the engine. This aids low-end power.

(5) Ignition. The CDI mapping was reconfigured for more response at low rpm.

(6) Reed petals. One of the easiest ways to improve low-end power, on any bike, is to install more flexible reed petals softer reeds open sooner. For 2006, Suzuki has all-new carbon fiber reeds.

Thnxz polishhammer.. I was able to confirm the case # J119-124184 on the 06 model to match the title, but looking to confirm it's the correct 06 cyl..

Here is a pic below of the bike I just picked up & looking to confirm it's legit. The owner also had an 05 model in boxes he's restoring. The bike has very low hr.s with a recent topend done & got suspicious of him swapping cyl's since the 06 didn't look like it needed a new piston.

Did u zoom in on the first pic with the entire engine? It says 37FA E-1 or something like that

The port changes in 06 were minor. I think power was smoothed out more from the other changes to the engines. I've had both and the 06 seemed to have alittle more lowend with a smoother hit. Nothing substantial by any means.

Good info.. This is the 2nd 06 model owned with the 1st one being a standard model a few yrs. back. This is a clean bike for a decent price so I picked up for a friend of mine who's been looking for the RC edition. He's not that knowledgeable with bikes so I'm helping him out. Going to go through it & sell it to him after I refresh the suspension, lube the pivot points & check all the bolts.

They're excellent bikes! They're arguably on par or better than the new ktms imo. After riding it u might want it for yourself!

Agree. Not a fan of newer gen. white or orange KTM's, personally think they're overrated.

The RM is a decent bike, but never jived with the handling of the RM. My buddy rides at a slower pace so I don't think he will be able to tell the RM chassis isn't as stable at faster pace.

They are not even close to the current Austrian bikes. Hell, they are not as good as the Yamaha.

I guess this is the part we're I'm supposed to dish out extra $ for an ugly orange bike instead of saving it to spend on my family for vacations etc? I like my older Japanese bikes.
In the past I made the mistake of wasting my money on a newer ktm. I personally don't like them.
I guess It's like a Ford chevy thing.
