Quick question here guys. Will a 2001 yz125 engine fit in a 2002 frame? My cousin over in Massachusetts is giving me one for free because the bottom end went bad on the 2002 but is engine is 2001. So would it fit with no problems ?

I think (THINK, mind you,) that the '02 bike had a frame change, but it was just to accept the new bodywork. The engine did not change until 2003, and even then the change may not have affected the engine bolts or countershaft location.
If you were looking at a 2005 or newer engine, I'd say no. The '02??? Hmmmm.... I'm about 80% on that one.

Anybody else have a better memory than I do about these?

Pretty sure the engines are the same/similar. Check pictures to see where engine mounts are.

Compare the engine case part numbers and cylinder head.

That may not help as 2002 was the first year of the 5 speed gearbox if I recall right. 2002-2003 or 2003-2004. It may have the same cases and a different part number.

Had an '03 and I remember the plastics and tank will easily swap from the 98 on bike, as will the 6 speed gearbox, so you may get lucky.

YES, 2002 engine will fit right in a 2001 frame. 2002 has a different gas tank, seat, subframe and plastics.
The mounting for the gas tank and subframe was also changed on the 2002 frame.
The only problem I can think of is you might have to use your intake from the 2002 engine.
Okay we are next in line here, so it is time to fly.

It must have been '03-'04 for the 5-speed. I remember having an '03 and not liking the tranny, and then I got an '05 and it was a "new for 2005" 6-speed transmission.
