What is a good method for cleaning a brake rotor that's been burnt to blue or brown?
Sand blasting?
I want it to look like a new rotor, if possible.

No dont sand blast it. It wont be smooth anymore. Maybe soak it in brake cleaner & get it vapor blasted? You dont want to use abrasives on it.

???
My YZ comes with sintered brake pads. Those are pretty dang abrasive!

Whenever I prep a bike to sell, I clean as much of the brown mud/crud off the rotor as possible. Sometimes I use coarse sand paper and brake cleaner, but it's still not bright silver, like a new bike.

Yeah pads can be rough. Theyre not a rotor lol. If your rotor was sand paper it would eat your pads. Pads are made of soft material

If the rotor is truly burnt, the discoloration will run through the brake rotor material and you will not be able to get it out.

I think the last Tusk rotor I bought from Rocky Mountain was $59. It might be the best route.

Either new rotor if there is a lip on it. If not, use scotch brite or a brass wire wheel.

Try this. I have refinished several works style pipes and while it removes the rust, it also removes the heat coloring from the pipe as well.
