A loose steering head bearing could allow the bearing to "hammer" the frame, and crack it. What model bike? How many hours on the bike?

Various things could have caused that. Incorrect bearing press fit tolerances and/or crooked bearing press can over-stress the frame which could lead to later cracking. It shouldn't fail under normal use, so it's suspect. Also suspect is that the crack is right on the parting line of the casting. Hard to say from a couple photos, but it looks like it may be a defect of some sort. Unless you rode sraight into a wall or something!

It’s a buddies 2007 crf 450. Thing is pretty mint and I almost bought it off him a couple weeks ago. I thought the same about a loose steering head but he swears it felt tight and right. Could this be fixed? Photo of the bike itself

Pretty "mint" ? Looks like a LOT of hours to me... Either way, I'd be looking for a used frame off eBay, and doing a full refresh through-out the bike while it was apart. I don't think you can restore the correct fit to the bearing race, now that it's spread apart with the cracks, and in the end, you still have a welded steering head! Good luck.
