Hi guys

2015 yzf 250

I was changing oil and filter This morning

I either overtightened the drain plug bolt by turning ratchet the wrong way or it was already like it

There is a small crack (see picture) that oil now drips out of and the bolt doesn't go tight
Picture is not my bike but similar problem

Is there a decent temporary fix?
I want to use the bike approximately 3/4 times before I put it in for a rebuild. Happy to change the case when I do this

Many thanks

Will this hold the bolt in the thread?

I have doubts of being able to repair that without pulling the engine. The crack made the hole oblong and i dont see how you can make it round again without welding and drilling a new hole.

Certainly try the above fix. Factor E is a smart dude.

I don't see why you couldn't just sit the bike upside down and weld it like that. You will have to flush the engine well after the welding and tapping is done. I don't think aluminum slag is much detrimental to the engine as long as you don't loose a big piece of aluminum.

Had a small drain hole crack on one of my bikes recently. Had my mechanic try a weld with the bike upside down. It did not solve the problem. The solution was to pull the engine and split the case. The challenge is how to apply enough heat without smoking the center case gasket.

Just as a starter to the problems associated with putting the bike upside down and then welding the case is the bloody oil in the case. No, not the full load of oil, the oil in the actual crack. Though, it could be quite entertaining to see the possible conflagration from a full case , or even an emptied case weld attempt Woohoo

It's the biggest pain in the arse about most case repairs I've ever done, oil contamination within the 'grain' of a broken / cracked case, even with thorough, multiple cleanings of the weld area. That, and the variations of case materials metallurgy.

Automotive part stores have rubber plugs that have a bolt down the center and will swell the rubber when tightening.

Thanks for the information guys
Ideally I want it rebuilt and probably will have this done in the autumn and get a new case or weld and retap the one that's on there

So looking for temporary fix in the mean time

I had the same thing happened before on a 06 rm 250. I took the drain plug out drilled a hole through the center. Then tapped that hole and put a smaller Allen bolt in with a copper washer. Then I used JB weld to hold the original drain plug in tight and fill the crack. When its time for a oil change just loosen the Allen bolt. It worked great was just slower at draining the oil.

I used it like that for over a year then sold that bike. It never leaked or gave me any issues.
