I have a set of cone valve forks. And they seem to be a little harsh on roots and smaller bumps. What should I do to adjust that to get more comfort

Cone valves are complex and totally dependent on how they are initially set up/built.
Back out on the compression...If you get much beyond 22 clicks out, you'll likely need a revalve.

Try softer(Counter Clockwise) on the top compression clicker.

After that speed up(Counter clockwise) rebound on the bottom if needed.

Also check to make sure there’s no preload on the upper adjuster. Is the big wrench on the top. Counter clockwise all the way is 0 preload. See image below.

CVs are pretty stiff out of the box. If you’re a lighter rider or not hammering hard you will probably need to get them revalved for your weight/riding ability
