My 250yz has been leaking a bit out the drain plug (it is welded due to crack).. So after a ride i went to see if i had enough tranny oil in there. Took the check bolt out, and oil came pouring out, but can i trust this??

Engineers calculate the level of the oil inside the cases and move the hole in CAD to be at the height required to check the level.. so yes id say its reliable

No. I would never trust it, from experience on the same bike. But you could test it; pull that overflow bolt, let it even out. Then drain the oil and see how much oil comes out.
