I'm just looking for opinions good or bad, I'm leaning toward the bad idea but I just thought I'd throw it out there and see what people think. I've got a friend doing a backyard 125/150 pitbike series this summer. So I started looking at CRF150Fs, most of the guys have fully built bikes with big bores. It would probably take 4k to buy and build a decent CRF which I'm not going to do. So I'm in the garage and I look over at an 82 XR200R that I have sitting. I started doing some measuring and the bikes are very close in size. It just needs 16 and 19 inch wheels which on paper will be very close to a 150 in dimensions. I was going to do a newer swingarm on it but I haven't found anything that will work, and since the later XR guys use the early shocks I'm just going to have Slip do the stock shock for me. Which brings me to the front. The hot setup is either the BBR kit for the stock or a CR85 front end. Before I hit ebay for that stuff I had a thought, I have a complete front end, hubs, and front and rear brakes from a mid 90s KX250. Now I know the forks are going to be heavier than the CR85 forks but maybe not too much more than the stock CRF setup with the steel rims. The forks can be lowered relatively easy, I haven't looked at the spacing on the swingarm but since it's steel mounting the rear caliper would be easy. It might look a little strange with the burly forks and hubs but the brakes would be better than anything from an 85 or 150. It's already got a shortened 2009ish KTM SX rear fender and number plates and a 2014 DRZ125 tank and seat so it's not going to look like a normal 150 anyway. Yea or nea on whether the big bike forks are going to be too heavy. Depending on what I find when I split the cases I'm either going to build the 82 engine or find a newer one, there doesn't seem to be a whole lot of difference until the CRF150s and 230s.

Just found a picture of a 150 with 45mm Marzocchis, these are 43mm so maybe it's not such a reach. Rear hub looks like it will work fine, shortening the spokes shouldn't be a big deal, time consuming but relatively easy. The forks were already adapted to a 1990 Husky 510 and it looks like the headtube between the 200 and the 500 are within about a 1/4" and very similar in diameter. If anything the 200 is larger. So it looks like weight is the only issue.

I'll continue my conversation with myself. I pulled the bike apart this morning, triple clamp bolts right up. The bottom Husky bearing is identical, using the top Honda bearing there is a few sheets of paper of play so I think I'm going to use the Honda stem. Adds two lbs per leg and probably another couple for the caliper but I would guess the hub and rotor is a little lighter than stock. The shortened spokes and smaller rim and tire will probably save a couple, the new triple clamp is a little lighter so net it may add 2-3lbs. if that to the front end. No different than the evolution of suspension did over the years, and I have no need to run a full tank. With a little enlarging of the swingarm slot the rear hub will work no problem. Just have to find a tap for the nipples and a die for the spokes which will have to be tapped on the narrower part of the double butting, nearly identical but the stock Honda nipples will have to be enlarged a tiny fraction.

Turning this into a build thread.

Total investment to date.

$50.00 Bike
$41.99 Tank
$30.00 Seat

Total:
$121.99

Going to start cleaning up unneeded parts to Ebay, goal is to build ready to race for under $500.

pics or it didn't happen. we have a group of 6 to 12 of us that ride every Tuesday evening, everything from stock CRF150F to bikes like my CRF100F stuffed in a CR85RB. our limit is supposed to be 150 air cooled and 16/19 tires. everyone adheres to the tire rule, displacement not so much. good times. enjoy

As soon as I get it pieced together enough to show something I will. I noticed the subframe is bent over an inch so I might be hacking it off to build an aluminum one so everything is off it again. Didn't think to take any pictures before I started.
