I rebuilt the nephew's YZ144 recently and have been dialing it in.
Running VP110/pump mixed with K2 40:1.
Playing around with the jetting and kinda going a little on the fat side with a 440 or 450 main.
Piston top and underside look great. No signs of detonation or strangeness. The thing rips
and runs clean.

I will say the squish is a hair on the tight side and right about 1.02mm. I'll open it up to more like 1.1mm
when I reassemble it this time. (opinions on squish measurement welcome, too.)

What worries me before I hand it back to junior is the pipe just looks cooked. This was Scotchbrited clean
before riding this morning. Am I tripping or does it look like it's heat-blued? Do pipes get like that? I'd hate to give him the bike saying it's good to go and he cooks it or something.

Looks good! ship it! having a nice blue pipe means your exhaust gas temp is right on the edge and jetting is near optimal. I don't see any signs of being lean. Watch an old 125 outdoor national race and the pipes would turn blue after a lap or two. Most people jet their bikes pretty conservatively and don't get the pipes that hot. Run it!

^Agreed, I have a raw HGS pipe on my 250sx and it gets blue down near the cylinder/behind the front wheel. Same as you internally as well, piston looked great.

Daring to jet where few men dare to go for fear of being too lean! I commend you!! Look at the Pro Circuit 125's back in the day. Their pipes would turn blue/purple all the way back to the rear cone. It's a beautiful sight! Haha

Somewhere I have a picture of John Dowd in 1998 aboard a factory YZ125. His pipe is as blue as his plastic.

It looks good to me. Don't let your kid ride it with straight pump gas, though.

in practice at Southwick in the 90s we would have a competiton to see who could get their pipe the bluest i could blue mine all the way and the silencer tip as well, dont worry about pipe color run it if the plug looks good and the power feels good then its good , the blueness is the cool factor
