2019 CRF450R with 30 hours with no fire. Electric start is working and wants to turn over but there is nothing there.

Just installed a new kill switch as I know this is a common issue, but didn't resolve the problem. Bike started up perfectly fine after I washed it, but as soon as I gave it a shot of gas it died and has not started since.

Valves were checked less than 5 hours ago and were perfect.

Going to check the spark plug next, but thought maybe someone has run into this issue that could guide me in the right direction.

Do you have one of those filters that slides in the neck of the tank? I do I am wondering if mine is helping this dirty filter situation.

I use a matrix funnel w/ a screen inside it. But the California fuel sucks & thats why the fuel filter looks like that.

I am going to order a spare today to be safe !!!!

Have you checked the Kill Switch I have heard of those being a problem.

Ive replaced a kill switch due to a crash, and dielectric greased her up good. At around 15hrs the decomp spring on the camshaft broke and the engine didnt want to start. Sounded like it was fighting compression so it was easy to find the issue there. After that i replaced the filter at 35 hrs and it helped with the bike randomly shutting off. At around 50 hrs the bike didnt start after a wash and i chased it down to my starter. It was completely corroded inside from all the pressure washing. Ive seen HRC pierce a rubber glove over the bars to keep the switch dry.
Only engine problems I had.

These are all really good suggestions for me to look into. I haven’t had any problems thus far, and than this randomly happens.

What causes the fuel filter to get like that? I ride at a very silty/sandy track and somehow have been getting dirt past the air filter and into the filter box.

One of my riding buddies had a corroded wire for the kill switch as well, but there was no fire at all from his bike when that happened. The starter works, but there is no fire/wants to turn over.

Had our regular guy work on last night. 48 years as a certified Honda mechanic and has no idea what’s going on with it.

Bike is getting fuel. Compression is normal. Valves are in spec. Spark plug is fine.

Next step is hooking it up to see if any codes were stored.

It wants to fire up, but something isn’t engaging. We got it to backfire a bit but never rolled over.

Just a thought, fuel pump is moving fuel, but is it making any/enough pressure to run the bike?

I have had this issue. Chased my arse for hours trying to figure it out. Finally sprayed some starter fluid in the intake and the bike fired right up and has not had an issue since. My only guess is the injector was clogged from bad gas. Worth a shot.

Check the fuses on your sub frame above the rear brake master cylinder - not likely your issue if it’s rolling over.

Also, reset your TPS. To do that, hold the killswitch and roll the bike over with nothing else touched. Then do the exact thing but with the throttle wide open.

I’ve been through 2 killswitches and have eliminated the stock smart-killswitch all together.

Other than that, I would unplug everything in front of the air filter and look for corrosion, then reconnect with dielectric grease.

I would suggest that the fuel pump is toast. The dirty filter indicates that it has been pumping dirt in the fuel. Put a new fuel pump and filter in it and add a fuel sock for the fuel tank.

Update...I’ve been advised that the motor needs to come apart. They believe the bike has been sucking in a bunch of dirt through the intake.

Definitely a winter project for now. Beyond bummed.

Did they try everything like different tank(fuel pump), ecu, throttle body, leak down test.

Sounds excessive to jump to “engine needs to come apart”. Did they give you a reason they came to this conclusion?

I’m with this... if they believe it ingested that much dirt I’d like to see a leak down test run; or at the very least a compression test run. before I’d jump to the conclusion that the engines damaged...

Whose "they"?... Some dude at a dealership who gets paid to take random shit apart? I'd trust the guys on here before I'd trust 99% of dealership mechanics.

Yes, they did do a leak test which showed 92% leakage. The two guys there were mind blown.

The owner didn’t charge me for the time they worked on it. They are also not taking it apart as I have someone I deal with outside of shop hours. I was actually really impressed compared to previous dealerships I’ve been to in the past. They brought me right in and showed me what they were doing. I’m by far no mechanic so a lot of this stuff was over my head that they dummied down for me.

I hear where you guys are coming from though. I was going to put new piston and rings in it this winter anyways...just a bummer it ended up this way.

Dam bummer. How did the dirt get in there past the filter? Was it on seated all the way ?

I have no idea...the last track I was at was just freshly groomed and it was fine silty sand. A filter can only go on one way. I asked some other Honda riders around here and they said they’ve had similar issues with dirt getting in the air box boot.

My bike (70 hrs) was turning over but not firing as well.. I traced it down to the fuel pump. The terminal connector inside the fuel pump assembly broke loose, I found this my disconnecting my fuel hose from the bottom of the gas tank, hitting the start button and watching for fuel flow - there was none.

I have the exact same problem, same connector is broken. Were you able to repair the connection and get the original pump working or did you have to buy a new pump assembly all together?

Also, this is my first EFI bike so I’m wondering how common is this? This was a pretty shitty bike failure for me because the bike cut out on the face of a jump and resulted in a nasty concussion. Luckily no broken bones.
