Dear Vital bros,

What are your opinions on the 2016 KTM SXF 250? I just recently got one, 58 hours on it since new. Just had a new OEM piston put in.
I've heard about the front spokes issue, transmission problems (which doesn't apply to this one according to VIN), any more things I should be aware of? What's your experience with those bikes?
Any simple mods that help the bike in any particular area? I definitely will have to replace the front tire, as it's a Dunlop MX52 and I hate it. Other than that, it seems like a cool bike.
Any input appreciated, Much Ty.

I too have a 16 250sxf and you will most likely have a tranny issue, we lost 3rd gear at 74hrs and it seems like any where around 80 is when a lot of people have issues. Luckily for us my son was coming out of a corner shifted to 3rd and boom it was over. But they do have a new gear that comes in the 2018 bikes that doesn't have any holes drilled in it and I also replaced 2nd gear because it was superceded also. I would highly recommend replacing it before it destroys your motor. Other than that the bike has been badass, the only simple mod you could do is put a 2 stroke air filter cage in it and remove the screen from the can if it's stock, other than that u need to open the wallet to do anything else for power. Also stick to oem pistons or even a JP piston but I wouldn't recommend vertex. Also check the clutch the 4 stroke seems to eat the clutch up faster than the 2 strokes. I ordered a new water pump kit for it to help keep it cooler because the stock setup doesn't look like a good design and I have ours modded

Put some Dunlop MX3S on there. My bike has 135 hours on the frame. I’ve done 2 pistons and a bottom end all before they went out. Replaced the gears also before they sent out. I had a shift stop break, but that was a fluke in my opinion.

The upgrades for the bike are endless. It’s a great base to start with. Once you get the suspension dialed in for yourself, you will be stoked!

Thank you for all the input gents!
I'll replace the gears asap.

Joe, I already got the bike on CV's, the suspension works pretty well Wink

Not that I'm aware of. I've only heard of 1 guy have an issue and he was overseas

Nope, only the 250s have it.

The "good" thing is that KTM will with a 99% certainty fix it for you if it fails. A couple of friends have been on 2016 and 2017 KTM 250s and they've always gotten new parts for free if the gearbox has failed.

I rode the 2018 250f on a demo day. It was incredibly good, i would probably be faster on a 250f than my current 450.

The battery doesn't work well with low temperatures, it's very light but not very reliable

I have a 2016 Husqvarna FC250, so pretty close of a bike Wink I bought mine with 60 hours on an all stock motor, then rode it up until 92 hours before checking it out. Valves were perfectly in spec, piston ring gap was perfectly in spec and everything internally looked really good. I put a new OEM piston in, because I believe it's CP who makes them? Rode it another 4 hours and then ended up breaking my back.Sad the bike has been super reliable though, and I'm very happy with it.

Thank you all for the input!
What pistons do you use in those bikes? Was wondering if OEM (which seems to be a CP piston) is the only way to go, or forged Vertex/Wossner would be fine? I had great experience with Wossner products in the past and its half the price of OEM ktm piston.

I wouldn't use anything but cp or je. Vertex is great in 2 strokes but I've seen them break in 4 strokes, not worth the risk imo

70 hours on my FC250. Heck brake pads are still good. Engine feels fresh. I am 56 and vet novice speed. I am gonna put a piston in at 100. Suspension is excellent. I have only had 3 bolts back out.
