2013 yz 250 stuck in 3rd gear then won’t shift into any gear

I was in a race last weekend where my bike got stuck in 3rd gear for a solid 2 laps. Then the last lap the bike went into nuterual then after a bunch of kicks on the shift lever back into gear until it once again went into Nuteral. I tore the whole bike apart and only found a little piece of a gear tooth in the case which was strange bec none of the gears where missing a tooth. What do you guys think it could be? Kinda have no clue here.....

Stupid question but you're sure it was a piece of a gear tooth and not another chunk taken out of somewhere? I guess the best thing to do would be to pull everything a part and just inspect to see if you find any thing. Or maybe it was some random debris from the factory that waited a few years to get knocked loose. Does it shift ok now?
EDIT: I should add that I am not much of a mechanic other than the basics, I am just throwing out some random ideas to try and help you find the culprit.

Post some photos of the tooth you found. Did you take the bottom end apart and split the cases? It had to come from somewhere.

Was it a used bike, could the previous owner have rebuilt the engine and left that in there?

I have heard there is some 3rd gear trouble with YZ's. Not a lot but not uncommon and it is usually 3rd gear. Time to split. Luckily they are fairly easy.

Could be the shift index ball bearing. This is the little lever with the ball bearing that explodes. It's located behind the clutch basket and indexes the shift drum wheel. This was a common problem on YZ250's. They updated it but I don't know what year they did.

I found where the tooth came from which was the water pump gear when it seized up a long time ago and broke but must had just been floating around in there. I think that was the main issue other then the shifter was missing a little spring
