Hello,
I figured this would be a good place to ask about figuring vans are popular in the moto industry.

I have an option to buy a former Kaiser Permenente maintenance van. 2008 Ford turbo diesel 6.0L with 114k on the meter. The van is flawless with it being the extended version.

I have no experience with diesels and am looking for past experience owners Or diesel guys on if this is a good buy. I’m buyIng it for work/moto and put around 100k every 4 years.

Thank you very much

I currently have a 6.0 I do like the truck that said I have put a lot of time and money into it. Would I buy another one though? No. The only reason I still have it is that I was rear ended and smashed into the truck in front of me. Truck should have been totaled but was about 1000 away from book price and the other persons insurance fought it. so anytime someone checks the carfax they freak out when they see a 15000 dollar crash repair on a truck that now books for less than that.

If you got an absolute killer deal on the van then it might be worth it to go this route.

Ford lost a class action lawsuit over the 6.0 and one guy that sued outside of the class action got a HUGE award.

There are plenty of people out there now that won't own a Ford diesel past the warranty period. Including the 6.7 which has a pretty good record for reliability from 17 on.

LA County FD tried the 6.0's and it was a goat fuck. The rescue squads get used hard and have a lot of idle time. Idle time for a diesel with a EGR cooler and all that shit is the kiss of death for those older diesels. Even newer diesel have issues if they are basic mall crawlers. They really are made to work.

Scared off yet? There are more horror stories all over the net.

I had a 06 f250 with the 6.0 and I loved it!!!!!!
It pulled my toyhauler awesomely!!!!!
I had one issue with the egr cooler failing, but other than that, it ran great always!!! Had close to 150,000 miles on it when I totaled the truck... If that hadn’t happened I’d still be driving it.....

Look for a 7.3, you won't regret it. Not the most power but they are easily upgraded reliably and just need a tad uncorking. Maybe a tuner if you want towing maps and high idle.

What’s the price and service history? If you’re going to just use it then the big thing to watch will be the egr. A lot of issues come when people try and add a tune or modify it some how. My mechanic I take my cummins to does a lot of Fords and has a lot of good to say about a properly maintained 6.0. The delete is a way to increase the reliability, especially if you want to do any form of tune or modification (turbo, injectors...). usually injectors CAN start going around 180-200k but running filtration can help with that, tend to be more of a duramax and cummins issue.

I've heard nothing but bad things about the 6.0 but I'm no diesel expert. I have an extended 7.3 and I don't think I'll ever sell it, it's that awesome!

The engines aren’t bad if u bullet proof them. The newer ones had some stc fitting issues but aren’t very hard to fix. Idk about a van though. If it was a truck I would say go for it but I’ve never worked in one in a van so I’m not sure how hard it would be to get to parts.
Surprisingly with a truck they’re easy to work on when u pull the cab off. Takes about two hrs. I lifted mine off with a large tractor. Put studs on it and a high output hpop, exhaust manifolds, non vgt turbo, and 205/100 injectors. I had no idea how fast these things could be with those mods! It makes my dads new Duramax look like a turtle!

If you get it delete the egr. Put a coolant filter on. And DO NOT runs Ford gold coolant. That’s where the problems start you need to run a coolant that is CAT ec1 rated. (Red). The for coolant has a silicate in it that build up and clogs the egr and oil cooler which then rupture and start leaking into each other. Which causes the blown head gaskets. I guess I should re word what I said in my earlier post. Now that I have done a lot of work to it. My truck is great. But previous history makes a big difference in how a 6.0 will run and operate.

If you have an EGR delete and a coolant filter the ford coolant is ok. The EGR was cooking it.

Can't delete in California and most states anymore.

If you do it right how would they ever know?

If the deals right then maybe it will be worth it. Atleast it’s better than the 6.4

Emissions tests. Would fail the visual inspection and many tuners are out of business or really deep underground.

I have never seen a 6.0 run for a sniff test not that an EGR would effect it anyway. If you do the mod correctly as I stated there is zero visual difference from a stock truck because the mods are all internal.
