Routed to the correct side of the frame? Not pinched between the frame and gas tank? Routed in the right location with regard to the tank bolts and any radiator mounts?
Dumb question: is it the correct cable?

TRy to adjust the cable as it sounds like you have no slack adjusted into it at all. You want about 1/8 throttle turn of free end play before the carb slide starts to move.

When we were on a 65 I got a throttle cable for a 85 and it'll allow u to run the cable in front of the number plate. I never used the 65 cable
