Morning guys, I picked up a 2000 CR250 last night. It came with 2 cylinders, the OEM one and a 1996 cylinder with ECU and stator. Guy claimed with a piston swap it was a better setup, for some reason i cannot ever remember anyone doing this. I thought the 2000-2001 setup was pretty damn good. So I guess has any vitards done such a swap or know much background on this theory?

I believe one's a flat top piston (97'+?) versus the dome style. Both should be great starting points! If you're looking just to keep one, I'd be interested in the other: Can still buy new 2000/2001 cylinders, but for my 96' they're more difficult to come across in decent condition. On the ECU's, one could be analog (96') vs. newer digital?

Congrats on the purchase! This generation CR is so much better than most give them credit for. Hope there's another Gen2 bike build posted in the near future cool

Agree with the seller of the bike. The 00 oem cyl. porting specs were designed for low-mid power vs. the 96 oem porting specs had a broader power curve. A 93 owned & a friends 96 had the strongest broadest oem powerbands out of any CR's owned or ridden from 78-07.

We both also owned the infamous 01 model, I purchased one from the showroom floor & after the 1st few hrs. of riding it I was disappointed. Afterwards I pulled the cyl. & head off to have a local engine tuner due some work to it. The oem porting specs were geared towards the mid-top so it felt weak off the bottom.
The 02-07 engines make the most power, but need a little work to get them to be as broad of a power curve as the 93-96 engines. Afterwards they will feel like the mid 90's engine, but on steroids..

Thanks for response guys, I always thought the 2001’s weren’t as good as the YZ ‘s of that era because the mikuni never jetted great.

I think I am going to stay with the ‘96 setup. Bike is a pretty low hour sand dune only bike, unfortunately the rod seized. No biggie but I bought it as a roller with engine in a box. LolPhoto

Don't want to discourage you, but after owning 97 & 01 CR250's (1st & 2nd gen AF) I would never buy another CR from the 97-01 yr. era again.
The YZ & KX 250 2 strokes were better bikes at the time. IMHO the 01 CR250 is overrated..

Oh you aren’t man, I am probably just gonna fix it and sell it, maybe ride it a bit. I agree man, I rode my buddies ‘01 Honda compared to my ‘01 yz250. Yamaha motor and handling is a lot better IMO.
