I recently purchased an 88 kx125 and I’m tearing apart the top end to see if the power valves are in good condition but I noticed something odd about the piston. The piston looks like it’s missing a chunk off the top but it looks intentional like the piston was modified. Head and cylinder walls have no damage, the piston is either aftermarket or modified because it looks different from stock. Has anyone seen this before or know anything about it. Photo

I have seen this before. It's an old tuning technique to advance the exhaust port via lowering the piston crown. An old engine guru did that to my '87 KX80 and the piston looked identical. To the casual observer, it looks like detonation but the piston was modified on purpose.
