1981 YZ125 Shift Drum Assembly

I've rebuilt my 1981 YZ125 and everything works great except fr the fact that when i attempt to take off in first, the engine stops. much like it's really in 5th, or 6th gear and it doesn't have the torque to pull it. I basically left the transmission together in a bundle, so not sure where I could have messed it up. Any ideas what might be going on?

Finally opened it up and sorted it out. It ran great until the stator wiring melted down. Now on to fixing the electrical. Gotta love 37 year old dirt bikes.
