17 CRF450 Oil

Just switched from a 17 CRF450 and trying to figure out the best oil to run. I've only used Spectro in the past but plan on using the Honda GN4 10w-40. Are synthetic oils better such as Motul 7100? or just stick with the Honda recommended oil?

I've been using gn4 in my 17 but am making the switch to bel-ray full synthetic. Gn4 only holds an MA rating that was done back in 2004 I believe, whereas belray is MA2. Researched all the oils available locally and belray, although the most expensive, has the highest ratings. Plus I've seen the pro circuit guys putting it in their factory bikes, good enough for them it's good enough for my stock bike. Spectro is almost as highly rated but only a synthetic blend. Just don't run amsoil, it's junk.

Shell Rotella in my 17. Buy it from Walmart at $15 bucks a gallon. Change every 2 hours. Been running it in my Honda's since 13. Motors look fantastic at 100 hours when I open them up to inspect.

I always use what the manual recommends. 10w-40 mineral for the first three oil changes, then 10w-50 synthetic.

Well I picked an 18 Crf450 about a month ago. I've always used Rotella and just recently switched to Maxima Premium 4.
The 17/18 have a garbage clutch and get very little oil no matter what you run. I pulled out the jutter spring+plate and was surprised on how dry the plates and clutch cover was. Shortly after that I fried my clutch. I called Hinson and picked their brain, of course they suggested the whole Hinson setup but I'm not ready to drop that money yet. I asked about oil and he said that the Maxima Premium 4 out tested everything. He also suggested running an extra 200cc of oil too. I've put about half that in with no oil in the drain tube.
I buy the Maxima for about $16 per gallon and I think retail is $22.99. So not a whole lot more.

I'm a firm believer in Rotella but figured I try what Hinson suggested. The guy there seem pretty involved and had some crazy stories about Brayton's clutch issues on the 17 crf.
