Hey guys,

I bought me '15 YZ450F new as a runout model at the end of 2015 here in South Australia. I had a pretty bad crash riding freestyle about 3 months ago, broke my hip and a couple vertebra's. All healed up and about to return to work, so naturally, i was begging to go over my bike and get it sorted as i had not seen it since the crash.

I've found a pretty nasty crack, straight down the center of the weld on the chassis, just below the head steam, (photo attatched)

Now, i know for a fact i wouldn't buy a second hand bike if the frame has had a crack in it and been re-welded, i feel like it would just always be in the back of my mind, but have people actually successfully re-welded there frames before, especially being in such a critical spot?

I was planning on selling it and getting a fresh bike once i'm back 100% healthy and fit. What other options do i have? Do i bite the bullet, get myself a new frame and sell it as a complete bike? Do i part it out? OR do i re-weld it. and do a ground up rebuild and keep the bike?

I'd like to race next season and still continue to ride freestyle, also do a lot of dune riding.
Any help would be hugely appreciated!
Cheers guys

Go to a good welder and have it welded. It happened to some and not others.

You can sell the bike for $1000 or you can spend $500 on a frame. I wouldnt weld it and ride it. Youll take less of a total loss doing the frame replacement than selling it. To a buyer its going to look like the bike was beat to shit and thats why the frame broke.

I would need a better photo but it looks like there is room to wrap a plate around it and weld the plate to it. Yes it won't be factory looking but it should be able to be done fairly nicely and it will be absolutely impossible to break it.

Joe Gibbs Racing and Rock River Yamaha both sell replacement frames that were used very little for really great prices.

after you attend to the frame, route that brake line to the inside.

I would never reuse a frame that was cracked near the stem unless it was just a beater ditch bank play bike. MX or FMX.... get a frame and do it right.

I would contact Yamaha and be super nice and friendly. Maybe they can help you out.

Otherwise JGR may have a frame you could buy.

Do not do this.
I know plenty of guys that held them cleaned and welded by reputable welders and continues riding them. Some are still riding and racing those bikes

Yamaha will warrenty it, it’s an issue with 14-16 yzf. Just take it to a dealer. I got a new frame for free.

The issue is it may work for a while, but fatigue cracks will become an issue eventually.

Consider this, it's not possible to get to the inside of the frame and ensure that there are no sharp edges left where the crack once formed after it's welded. Although it might look fine on the outside, on the inside it's very likely that there are still remnants of the crack left, creating large stress raisers that will allow the crack to propagate again over time. That time could be next year, 10 years from now, or it might never progress to the point of being an issue, but that's not something I would want to chance. Heat treatment afterward would also be a good idea, but that's a debate that would get WAY out of hand for this thread.

Never thought about any of that. I just know a bunch of dudes that had cracked frames, had them welded and then kept riding or sold the bike and told the new owners who are still currently riding them. Never thought about any of that stuff though.

Yamaha replaced mine when that happened, along with about 4-5 other Guys I know had it happen too.

But that was when it was 4-6 months old too, not sure they would now, I’d look for a frame if Yamaha won’t replace it.
