I have a 2011 KX250F that has what I believe to be a TPS issue. I’ve tried moving it in small increments (as I’ve read forum after forum on how to measure the resistance but still a little confused on it) I can get it to run smooth but with a super low idle. Or I can get the idle where I like it but then I get a popping backfire issue. And irratic throttle response. I believe the tps is bad.

Is there an easy way to hook up power to the bike to be able to get a volt meter on the bike without cutting a bunch of wires?

I have a new tps coming a little premature as I haven’t exactly identified that it’s bad but have 7 days to get the bike running how I need it for the first race of the season and don’t want to not have it if it is the culprit.

First of all you need to buy a service manual.

Your idle RPM should be 1800ish( dont remember off the top of my head what the 250s are).

You dont need to cut wires to measure the voltage. The connector for the TPS is on the right side of your bike between the throttle body and exhaust. You simply unplug it, and connect wires as shown in the service manual. Kawi provides a very detailed diagram for this. Essentially what youre doing is completing the circuit with your multimeter spliced in using your wires.

Adjust your TPS to .6-.62v at idle.

Heres a little diagram that explains what youre doing with your wires. The kawi manual has much more details and pics than this though.

Thank you for the reply!

I was looking for the other end of the pig tail last night and could not locate it. I will try again this evening. Can you do this with the bike not running?

Agreed I need a service manual as I work on this thing more than I ride it!

If you want to do it with the bike turned off youll need to connect a 12v battery. Ive got a little battery from walmart. You can use a car battery if you have one. The one i got was like $30.

That is were my confusion sets it.

I have a spare vattery laying around. Where would I hook it up to get power to the bike?

You replace the capacitor with the battery. Again, youll want the service manual for this.

Thank you for your help! I’ll look into all of this.

Do you think this could be done with a Power Probe w/out the bike running?

Paint cars for a living and some of the techs here have them so I have access to one.

I’m thinking I can hook the probes from the power probe into the capacitor harness. Then use a ohm reader on the pigtail for the tps. Same as hooking up a car battery just possibly a little less cumbersome some with getting the battery hooked into the capacitor harness.

Got the bike hooked up to 12v power source and confirmed I have power to bike by checking power to fuel pump.

My wires do not go to another 3 prong harness. They split and red/yellow yellow/green go to a 4 prong and gray hooks up with a couple other grounds I’m assuming. So far un able to get any voltage readings. From following service manual instructions. I’m assuming evening if the tps is bad I’d still get some sort of reading.

Here’s a pic of my wiring diagram.

You need to look at the section for adjusting the tps. Youre looking at the main diagram. Heres my kx450 diagram. Yours should be similar.
