Depends on what characteristic you want to enhance. More bottom or more mid and top? Decide what you want most and make the call. I won't buy PC anymore, their fitment sucks. Sick of cutting mounts of brand new PC parts, re-positioning an re-welding them back on. That's just me though. Pretty coincidental that all their stuff needed massaging? Lousy workmanship and quality control in my mind. Also, seems to me that MXA said a Boyesen Rad valve gave more grunt and the V-force had more top-end. Maybe other way around. Have fun, buy both to suit each other and twist that grip!

I have PC on my bike...with their jetting specs. the thing has a lot of low-end. If you listen to Steve Matthes at all, he says all you need is 304 silencer, v-force reeds, and a Chad Reed pipe that PC still has left over (have to call ask them for it.) I like my PC stuff.

There were only like 5 of those Chad Reed pipes returned back to PC from Yamaha that I know of. I know 2 were spoken for pretty quickly. That was back in 2006, there may have been more found in the more recent.

The Chad Reed pipe supposedly is not as abrupt as an off the shelf works pipe. Alledgedly/supposedly the Yamaha spec pipe was needed to smooth out the advances they had made with their mortorwork. Some of those Yamaha pipes had the riders name stamped the PC tag, others the tag has no identification/part number or name.

Cool man, thanks for the info. Matthes had said in an internet chat how great the pipes where and in a Podcast with Mitch they talked about some of them being around-though Mitch felt the pipe they sold for the YZ was the best for the average rider. I thought it was worth mentioning.

After having used all the major manufactures pipes, FMF and PC the best that I have found for the YZ is a DEP pipe http://stores.deppipesusa.com/-strse-664/Yamaha-Exhaust-YZ250-DEP/Detai… ,and honestly it really was not even debatable. It was just that much better than the other brands.
+10 I have a DEP and it is unbelievable Clean and crisp off the bottom and revs to the moon (Dare I say it like a fourstroke) power is very smooth all the way through no weak spots no spikes.

Strip the paint off the stock pipe, get an R304 PC or FMF shorty silencer, jet the thing according to MXA's specs and go twist grip! I'm running a stock set up, Vforce3 on mine (06) with all of MXA's specs and it runs so crisp and responsive I'm afraid to put an after market pipe on it and mess up the perfect jetting. I'm not exactly sure where I heard it but for some reason I thought the stock pipe on the recent model years is a damn near PC copy and isn't worth the money to go after market, unless it's cosmetics you're after.

+1 on the DEP. I'm running with a PC silencer after testing a variety of silencers with it. The combo I like 2nd best is stock pipe with FMF shorty silencer. The DEP is the only pipe I like better than the stocker. Would like to try and HGS though, as I have heard really good things.

Don't buy the PC stuff! Some guys here seem to like them, but I doubt that they've tried different pipes...
Got rid of my PC combo, liked the stocker more. After changing YZs with friends we all agreed on that fact! Midrange and nothing else. And dream on about Chads old pipes, you really don't think you still get them?
And check the comment about smoothing the power compared to the stock PC pipe...

Forget the V-Force too, I replaced it with stock cage and Boyesen reeds.A friend of mine wanted it,but replaced it a short time later too.

The best pipe I tried is defitly the DEP! Great all around improvement, after 2 years moto-ing still only 1 dent. So they're a great improvement power-wise and withstand some abuse way better then the rest.

That's really an easy answer about which pipe to buy for the YZ...

If the engine is stock except for a pipe and silencer nothing beats the DEP pipe with the long silencer. No FMF or PC combo is even close.

I'm running a Scalvini pipe and carbon silencer on mine and love it. I had stock, then fmf pipe/stock silencer, then fmf pipe/Leo Vince silencer and I like the Scalvini combo the best.

Stock setup is definitely great pipe though.

Just looked at the MXA recommended jetting in the 2011 test. 2006-2013 is same engine-wise except for longer silencer and slightly less compression starting in 2011, but nothing to effect the jetting. Only thing that changed in there was in 2007 Yamaha went 1 step richer on the needle from N3EJ to N3EW to address pinging problems that some people had when running pump gas.

Anyway, MXA recommended jetting is dead stock. 178 Main, 50 pilot, N3EW needle. The only change they recommend is "go up 1 on the main if you run an aftermarket pipe"> Oh brother. Sounds like their standard "add 1 tooth to the rear sprocket" they copy/paste into every bike test.

http://www.motocrossactionmag.com/Yamaha/News/2011-YAMAHA-YZ250-MOTOCRO…

Anyway, just wanted to point out that MXA does not have some magic jetting specs for the YZ250. That's not a bad thing though because stock is pretty damn good jetting.

I have a 2006. On mine I am running the FMF Factory Fatty and the shorty silencer. My jetting is stock except I run the N3CJ which is 1/2 clip position leaner than the stock N3EJ. I also run 100 octane pump "race gas". The bike never pings and it totally rips. I can't compare pipes as this is the only pipe I've ever run but I would say it's a very good all around pipe with no surprises or weak spots. The Factory Fatty is made from a thinner gauge steel than the regular Fatty so it's probably a little more dent prone. And of course it is bare so it will rust but we don't have to worry about that in AZ.

There is tons of info in the Yamaha 2-stroke forum on Thumpertalk. Some guys have done lots of dyno comparisons on all the pipes. I would say that generally most do not like the PC pipe as they say it lacks bottom and favors the top. Also, many on there seem to run way leaner jetting than stock which I still can't understand.

pete24: Regarding the plastic kit to look like the 250F. Does a standard 250F graphic kit work for the shrouds and plates? or is it custom sizing?

Thx

Thanks!

So there is no difference in the kit for a 250F and the one special made for the YZ250? (Acerbis) or UFO?

The setup on Pete's blue bike above has a custom tank and everything wit the YZF plastics.

The UFO kit (http://www.ufoplasticusa.com/item.php?brand=6&model=71&year=2010&descri…) is adapted to the actual YZ tank and other mounting parts so they require custom graphics, not the same from a YZF.
