I am wanting to put a cr500 engine into my 1996 cr250 frame, which engine would best fit, and also which motor is most recommended power/reliability and parts availability wise.

1996?

Why?

People usually take the motor out of a steel frame, and put it in an alloy frame...

Join CR500 riders or banned CR500 riders if you're serious about it. The guys there will give you the right info.

89-01 are mostly identical. They only have minor differences. The mounting points are exactly the same. Parts are readily available new or used. Even the 85-88 engines could be made to fit, I think the only difference in mounting points is the swingarm bolt hole is larger in the 89up engines. I think 89 up is 17mm where 85-88 is 15mm. The 85-88 can be enlarged to accept the 17mm swingarm bolt or just swap out the case bushings, 15 for 17. Good luck, sounds like a fun project.
