Is the gear shifter locked up too? If the gear shifter is solid, you probably have a problem with the shifting drum. You need to start by pulling the right side engine cover (the smaller case that is between the clutch cover and right side crankcase) and check the shifter detent. Sometimes the springs and shifter detent can come out of place. If the detent is fine, you probably have a problem with the way the shifting forks are riding on the shifter drum.

If the gear shifter is not locked up, but it doesn't feel like it "clicks" up or down into gear, the problem is probably solely the shifter detent. there is a collar spring wrapped around the shifter detent. Make sure that is in place and again check the internal workings of the detent below the hold-down plate.

Once you get that right side cover off, reach under the bike and try to shift the bike with your hand while watching how the shift detent is working. If it works properly it will slide around the drum and "click" into place. If you don't see anything wrong with the shifting detent while you are shifting it, the problem will be in the tranny itself and you will need to split the cases and see what's going on.

No, the shifting detent it on the inside of the right side engine cover. you will have to take the cover of to see it. The shifter rod runs through the bottom of the engine and engages the detent on the right side. I'm guessing your problem has nothing to do with your clutch.

I think tech is on the right track, the Kawi's cases can crack around the pin the shifters "return spring" rides on. Once they crack the shifting becomes hit & miss as the pin/cases flex. This photo shows where I had to weld the cases back together. Might not be your problem but it's worth a look. This bike had the same symptoms you are describing.

If your shift lever goes up and down and you don't hear a "click" sound then like the guys above I would suspect the arm. I just had to split my cases last week to replace the one way reed valve and when I put it back together I installed the arm, spring, washer and when I tightned the hold down bolt it caused the arm to bind and not move. Any issue with that arm will cause it to not shift so check that out first.
