I have a 2004 cr250 that I recently bought off a friend for 1400 bucks. After I bought it I tore it completely down and as it sits right now it is just a bare frame and I will get it acid washed this weekend. My question for you guys is what you think I should do to it. I am not a very fast guy I am just your average C class motocross racer. I have three options, I can spend a bunch of money on it tricking it out and replacing basically everything to use it as my main bike, I could do a budget build and have it as a backup bike to my 06 yz125, or I could just clean it up real well, sell it for profit and then get a yz250 or 250sx. Let me know what YOU would do if it was your bike! Here are a few pictures as it sits right now and I will post some more after I get the frame and swingarm shined up and a few parts sandblasted.

I'd clean it up and sell it, it wasn't in great shape to start with. Take the 2 grand you can get for it and look for a 5,6 or 7. These were better bikes. I found a mint '06 about 5 months ago for $1,800. I rode it last weekend for the fist time and it's like brand new! I have an '03 to compare to as well and the 6 was a fantastic surprise.....

Think the 5,6,7 Hondas are better than the 6+ yamis? I loved my 2011 yz250 quite a bit.

The Yamaha 250 is legit, so maybe stick with them since you already have the YZ 125. You have to stay on the YZ 250 pistons...They grenade if you push them to far. Not sure what your RPM range is, but mine is high and I would change at 10hrs.

Well I decided to rebuild her, haven't spent a whole lot of money as of yet. I sent the suspension off to Racetech and the only things I have bought so far is the airstryker carb and some new radiators. Here are a few updated pictures of the cleanup.

Looks like the hose that came with the carb kit. It should be available at any dealer. I used the mxbonz hose and clamp kit to get the better clamps for the airboot.

Suspension is currently getting dialed in at Race Tech.
The motor is completely apart and I definitely need a new crank. Piston has some nasty marks on the exhaust side but the cylinder doesn't seem bad enough to need to be replated. I'm not sure if I am going to get an OEM crank or HotRods..have heard very many good things about Hotrods cranks.

Not sure if anybody is even following this thread but I figured I will update anyways....My frame is finally done after hours of scrubbing. The swingarm is very imperfect but I'm not really sure what I can do to make it any better so if ya have any tips please let me know.

Use an OEM 05-07 crank. It's a better part and it's only $204 through Honda East Toledo.

Love the rebuild thread. Nice work miller!

The stock exhaust flanges crack so I used a Boyesen billet flange. It's a little longer and helps the bottom end. I thought the RAD valve was a nice improvement too. Wish I would have known about the carb swap back then.

I appreciate that! and yeah my exhaust flange isn't cracked but I will probably get a new one anyways. Im probably going to keep the stock reeds, only for that fact that they are in perfect condition. I just got a sweet complete stainless steel polished bolt kit for a helluva price on ebay. Now I just need to get my cases soda blasted and get the motor rebuilt and I can get this project rollin along.

Sand is using actual sand, soda blasting is baking soda.

Good job on the frame man, my swing arm was pretty beat up. I ended up sanding the whole thing to try and bring back the factory brushed look. It basalt of work but it looks way better now.

Thanks Travis! If you don't mind me asking, what grit did you start with and did you start with and did you do it all by hand or did you use a palm sander also? I asked Blake Young and he told me DO NOT use a power sander but then I saw an instagram picture of Jordan Troxell (TLD Mechanic) using a belt sander on his swingarm so it got me thinking.

Hey mate you have done a great job on your frame, did you soda blast it? That stainless bolt kit, does it come as a kit or did you have to order each bolt size? Did you get the bolts off ebay? Thanks for your help

Thanks man, no I did not soda blast it, just a lot of scrubbing. The bolt kit came as a complete kit on ebay. If you search for stainless steel polished bolt kit, followed by whichever bike you want it for, they have them for most bikes. Any other questions just let me know.

Sorry for the lack of posts guys. Really havent gotten anywhere in the actual build because it is cold as heck and have no desire to go out and spin wrenches in my 20 degree garage. Just have been slowly gathering parts. I have all of my motor parts, clutch parts, and just bought some red applied clamps and I think I'm going to get some HRC oversized bar mounts. I had my cylinder replated and suspension revalved and resprung. Parts I still need to get are wheels, chain and sprocket, bars, levers, throttle assembly, and a few other trick bits. Here is another picture of my frame and my graphics kit I just put on today.

I started with 120 grit on a disk with a cordless drill to get the nasty out of the way and worked up to 1500 by hand. It was a lot of work, but looks pretty legit now. Good job on the bike so far. Should be pretty sweet when done. Smile

I ended up getting the swingarm sandblasted and I am now going to go through some stages of scotchbrite and sandpaper until I get the finish I want.
