Looking for some mechanical advice- bought a very lightly used 2014 RMZ450 a little while ago. Changed the oil before I rode it, but noticed that it had some fine magnetic metal shavings on the magnetic oil strainer. They werent big, but enough for concern.

I cut apart the filter and didnt find any in there.

My question is, do these bikes give up some metal when they are being broken in or fairly new? The bike had about 20 hours on it when I bought it.

Ive ridden it twice since I did the first oil change, but Im laid up with a broken femur right now so I cant kickstart it to warm it up and change the oil again.

Thanks for any insight.

make sure you check/ clean the oil screen (Under shifter). it has a magnet in it if that was never cleaned it could be the issue.

Yea, thats the one Im talking about.

I dont know if the previous owner just never cleaned it, but its possible. Thats why I want to change the oil again and compare it, but cant due to the broken leg.

Just wondering if this is normal. I also have a 2013 CRF250, and I don't think Ive seen any shavings come out of that one, but it doesnt have a magnetic strainer or bolt.

My 13 Rmz250 had a good amount of shavings on that oil strainer as well. I cleaned it really well and put it back in. Bike had about 35-45 hours and ran like new.

I bought mine with a similar amount of hours on it. I've had the same issue, but nothing I got worried about. I've seen that in the past on pretty much any bike.

In my experience, the RMZ is pretty notorious for that. I've owned a couple and one brand new that did it for probably the first thirty hours.

Anyone know what the shavings are from? I recently had to empty unused tranny fluid from my rm250 due to a gasket leaking. The fluid was not run and there was small metallic pieces in the fluid. Had me a bit concerned but I never split cases to inspect the gears. After reading this I guess it is just normal for suzuki? I don't have a magnetic plug maybe the pieces were hiding in the transmission?

It's the dogs on the gears getting rounded off..False neutral and slamming back into gear was the culprit on my 12 and 13 RMZs...Also wear on the shift forks...

Thanks for all the replies. Im probably going to put a new piston in it, and while Im in there check the crank for any play. I was originally worried that the shavings were from a bearing in there somewhere.

We had shavings about the first 25 or 30 hours, the last 70 no shavings or any other problems,

I had the same worries, did a bunch of research, most responses are the same your getting here, change your oil often clean all your filters often, ride and enjoy the bike

A local pro that rides Suzuki told me that most of the metal shavings comes from the clutch
