Well, after recently learning of the new CR 250af, and seeing as I own a 2001 model myself, how much work would it take to make my own?
Is the 2009 crf 250 frame any different than the previous years of the bike? If so, I would try to get a newer rolling chassis. Which is also going to be hard.
What can I reuse from my bike right now besides the engine?
All help is appreciated.

Ofcourse, it couldnt be without a new FMF system, and other things. It isnt close to stock by any means, but it isnt bored or anything bad. Just the bolt on goodies.
So i take it the consensus is to leave it on the original frame?
The Shop
The CR250's were all mass produced bikes- if you want an investment, buy investments. If you want to have fun on a dirtbike, have at it. Even if you'd bought a first year CR250 Elsinore and stored it, the value would be nothing compared to taking that money and investing it into basic Blue Chip stocks.
I'd be way more concerned with any potential cutting or welding that might need to be done. If done wrong, it's liable to break at a most inopportune time, like landing a 50 mph triple.
I remember a thread on Thumper Talk's "Honda 2-stroke" section where a member slapped a 01 CR250 motor into a 02+ CR250 frame, though I don't remember seeing any 4th gen frame swaps over there. Maybe do some searching over there?
also its in 10 times better shape than any close model 250 ive rode. its definitely been maintained over the years.
But while were on the topic, and i might need to make a new post about this since this topic wont get me as many answers, but what do I need to do to my 250 in order to put some modern plastic on it? Ive heard I have to change the gas tank and air box?
Will this require any major work? Or more or less just bolt on?
but it is all about fun, so if you haven't already, I'd go over to the following forum and do some reading in the "friggin beer can" section. Just be sure to search thoroughly before asking a question which has already been dealt with... you will get shredded
Banned CR500 Riders
so, i guess im just going to throw on a new gas tank and airbox, and update my plastic.
btw, if anyone has a link to a thread on doing this, even on another forum like jmc talked about, id really appreciate it.
nice nod to service honda though.
This is true I have seen it over on thumpertalk.com ....basically as I remember the thread they said you could just drop in an 00-01 engine in the 02 and up frame without any mods there you would have a more modern CR frame and plastics with the best engine of them all, thats the way Honda sould've made the bike IMO and you can find 02's 03's for as cheap as 1500 on craigslist
Please do some research at TT before you commit but if my memory serves me it should work but I am not 100% sure ....just 90%
the bike is already an AF,
and in a decent chassis..
so i think it would be a huge investment of time and trouble,
to gain asthetics, and a bit better handling chassis.,
the time and money would be better spent,, in either updating your bike suspension ,
or selling it and buying a newer bike..
.
very little, other than engine and carb ,
could be used in changing over to a CRF250R chassis
IF you already had a CRF250R chassis, so both donor bikes in hand,
it migh tbe worth th etrouble as it is a better handlking package once completed.
but it is far more modification than most realizre,
the entire cradle area needs reworked, the yoke area raisded severa linches..
major airbox revaming..radiators modified.swingarm spacing,.
modding the pipe and silencer, etc etc etc
welding aluminum isnt hard, but there is pre heated- post treatments in a frame like this..
.
For someone wanting to buy a brand new CR250 ,
which is no longer availible from Honda,
and have a CR250 in a newer style chassis than Hondas last CR250 effort
then we (service Honda) are a good source to do so!!!
Tiki-
I have a CR125 in the works,
it will use a new 99 CR125 engine,and be in the 09 CRF250R chassis.
it is fairly easy to put an 01 cr250 engine into a newer 02-07 CR250 frame
(remember in that case you are simply adapting a cR250, t oasccept a diffferent year of cR25 0engine, much less involved)
so if looking for a slightly newer chassis and *look"
that would be the easier route!!
if determined to use the 01 engine anyway
and i do like the 01 engine better than the 02-07's
*shrugs*
