Just picked this bad boy up. Starts first kick but of course needs tires chain sprocket and new clutch cable. Not too shabby for 2,000. What are the important things to pay attention to and awesome parts to make it special. This is definitely a project bike.

Thanks for your responses in advance!

Lovely bike. KX's always look great.

The clamps and discs on the bike aren't from an 06. They're 2005 or earlier.

I have a 2007. Clutch is very notchy felling and the lever pulses, buy a full Hinson clutch. If you can afford the full clutch just get the outer basket. Bike has plenty of power , spend your money on the suspension. They are almost as fun as a 4 stroke, almost.

21.5 set offset clamps make the bike handle much better, or buy PC's linkage arm, or lower the shock. Stock suspension is decent, get it revalved if you're going to race it. Crank is a one year design, will need to rebuild it if doing a bottom end because no one sells and aftermarket option. Check your air gap, some people report some detonation stock when the motor is under load. I believe I have mine set at .30 (IIRC) and run VP110 or C12. Motors are fairly high compression and love race gas. Jetting is very rich on the bottom to mid and lean up top. I'm running a 45 pilot, 2 or 3rd clip position and anywhere from a 162-168 main depending on weather. 1.5-2 turns out on air screw.

I have a set of stock 06 clamps and forks if you're interested. I'd let them go dirt cheap.

Through further investigation it is a 2005, (dang it). But still great project bike either way. I'm 6'3" so i'm trying not to lower the bike linkage wise. Its definitely only gonna drink c12. I'm definitely gonna get some sort of different front end suspension though since i hear nothing but trouble from the 05 stock stuff. Maybe some updated spring stuff via ebay or hell maybe some 13kxf air stuff. All depends on budget when i get to that point. I appreciate you're comments and keep em coming!

I didn't mean to be a dick or anything by suggesting about the year of the bike. The kx's look even better with kxf suspension, especially if it has dlc. I hate the look of the stock forks on my 04 kx125 - it's the horrible silver band that bugs me. Haha.

Be nice to see pictures of the bike once you have it finished!

I have a set of newer 450 forks on mine. For the amount of money you're going to spend to swap forks and then respring/revalve, you're better off having the stockers set up for you.

I have an 06 I am going through right now that I have owned since March of 2011, and I bought it with 20mins or so on it.

Since then I have put probably 120 hours on it, and only replaced top ends in the engine, still on the original clutch plates and bottom end. Great bike.

Mine has 450F forks, and a shortened shock, and is probably the best handling bike that I have ever ridden.

I love my 05. The forks were horrible though. We were unlucky/lucky enough to have someone drop something into our 06kx450 motor and blew it up when we went to start it so we took the entire front end off of the 06 450 and put it on our 05 KX250. Front end handles like a dream now. If you can get newer forks to throw on it, I would immediately. Congrats on the buy, you'll love it.
