Hi -

1) Can someone tell me if 0.46 fork springs are too stiff for a 220lb (w/o gear) old, slow guy on an 03 CR250? Used the Race Tech on-line spring rate calculator and that is what it said to use for both MX & enduro. Forks are still beating me to death & wondering if I have spring or valving issues or both.

2) Grease - What grease do you guys use on fork seals? The ol' standby Bel-Ray Waterproof Grease seems kinda thick to be smearing on fork seals...any thoughts?

Thanks!

Honda forks are brutal, when set up correctly work great. 90% of the fork problems reside in the rear of the bike.

Spring height and sag set correctly will make your forks feel much better. If you are squatting the rear, because you exceed the weight for the rear spring your forks will feel solid and beat you to hell. This is because you have raked out the front end.

Get the manual - read the spec's.
Install correct rear spring for your weight with gear. Make sure the spring length installed is within the specifications. I believe this is between 10 1/4 and 9 1/4. Dont preload the hell out of it to get your height, this will hurt you later. Check the sag - static no weight on the bike, extended and with you on the bike.

If the rear is good - meets all the measurements and is keeping the rake of the bike correct, then look at the fork springs. You may need to go up to .47 or .48. Factory Connection makes better oil lock collars and different compression springs which help greatly.

If you want to cheaply change the valving - start with changing the weight of the fork oil. As far as the grease - I use the grease in my shop at the time, usually have no issues.

I have been there, this solved my problems also helped in other areas of riding.

Adding to the confusion of suspension setup, a soft fork can feel harsh if it is blowing through the first half of the stroke too quickly. If this were the case, a stiffer spring would be better. Like Tiki said, check the manual. There's a lot of good info in there.

I use SF3 fork seal grease. Stiction can make the forks feel harsh. I recommend Golden Spectro cartridge fork fluid.
