So I currently own a 2016 YZ250F and have always been on a 4 stroke since I started MX (only been riding about 3 years now, minus a deployment in between). I found a great deal on a new YZ125 and was looking at possibly picking up a 2nd bike. I love the idea of having variety in my garage and a back up bike in the case something gosh forbid happened to my 250F. Im a bit of a mechanic and understand the maintenance aspect of both, like the simplicity of a 2 stroke engine as I've never done much besides a top end on a 4 stroke 75 hours or just before. My concerns are 2 fold, a) do I really need a 2nd bike, lol, maybe stick that money in a disaster 4 stroke incident slush fund b) will it hurt my progression riding. I understand 2 strokes tend to make you a better rider, but I have friends who both advise against and for one saying it will and others saying it will put me back. Little background C rider, old guy, weekend warrior, 155lbs. Just looking for everyone's thoughts.

The appropriate number of bikes to own is n+1, where n is the number of bikes you currently own. I say go for it, you will love riding the 125.

My 125 is my favorite. I bring my kx125, and 450, and alternate throughout the day. I noticed that the 125 helped my corner speed on the 450, and the 450 helped me tide a lot smoother on the 125. Its pretty unreal. After a while, you learn to adapt differently from bike to bike, and that is very cool. I subconciously clutch more on the 125 than on the 450, and at the same time, dont rely on luggint the 450 as much. Where i really noticed an improvement is in braking. After riding the 125, i use the front brake a lot more, am on the brakes a lot more evenly, and am a lot smoother going into corners than i used to be.

Great bike to hone your clutch, brake, and momentum skills. I sold my 250f and rebuilt my 125. Found out how bad of a rider I really was lol. Takes some work to go fast on but you can really take the corners fast. 2 strokes are so easy to fix and light as a feather. I enjoy have a more lively motor.

Variety is the spice of life...unless you screw up and get married. Then you better have kids so you can get them dirt bikes. My son's YZ125 is my favorite to play on of the 7 currently parked in my abode.

I can't see the down side. If you are serious you may want to park the 250F and ride the 125 until your lap times are comparable. 2 strokes turn way different and you will be very busy keeping your momentum. Then jump back on the 4 stroke and after some re-acquaintance I bet you will be faster.

Of course you may end up keeping the smoker and getting rid of the stroker.

also; you might catch the sickness " i can be a 125 hero like James stewart was" -itis.

honestly a 125 is a perfect 2nd bike. it makes you a better rider all around. if you apply the same momentum carrying techniques a 125 needs you'll be much faster on your 250f

There is no way that bike will make you slower, that's for sure. You have to really RIDE a 2 stroke to make it go fast.

I was in the same boat about a month ago. I ride a 14 crf250 normally..... I picked up a low hour 02 cr125 and since I bought it I can't get this goofy smile off my face. I took both bikes out last weekend and I never took my 250f off the truck... Nuff said.

Was so excited to get her, smiled the whole way home looking in the rearview mirror. I'm pretty sure I would trade my GF for this bike. Cannot wait to let her rip, suspension is off to FC should have it back soon and then time to ditch my 4 stroke ways.
