2016 KTM 350 SX-F - draining gas

Edited Date/Time 12/12/2015 9:20am
Just got a 2016 350 SX-F and I'm gonna start running race gas in it but can't work out how to drain the tank and fuel system. This is my first 4-stroke and it obviously doesn't have a carb to drain in the two-stroke sense, but I want to make sure I get all of the fuel out of the system. Also, the gas doesn't drain out of the tank when I unclip the fuel line from where it goes into the er... engine, carb replacement? Man I have no clue about this bike. Any ideas greatly appreciated!

Cheers

We use a little siphon pump from the auto parts store. Pretty easy and we don't have to disassemble the bike at all

Thanks. That'd work for the gas tank, but what about removing the gas from inside the bike. I thought the problem with leaving race gas in the bike is it can eat rubber seals and even corrode metal parts in the throttle body/injectors and leave residue. That's why I want to drain it all out of the bike, not just the gas tank.

3 bolts. To take the tank off takes about 3 min. Sorry 4 with one of them for the seat

Right, but what about gas left in the bike/throttle body/engine etc? How do you drain that out?

After you drain the tank, start the bike and run it out.

I took the 17mm nut under the left side of the tank off - used a funnel and let her drain into a container. Put the 17mm nut back on, leaned the bike over on the left so the fuel on the right side of the tank moved to the left and removed the nut and did it again. Good enough.

I don't think leaving race gas in your bike is any worse than leaving pump gas with ethanol in it, if not better.

Ok, but doesn't it have injectors that can burn out if ran without fuel? I'm guessing here, but trying hard to not norse up my new bike.

Maybe some, but there's a big sticker on the top of my race gas can that says not to leave any fuel in the bike.

I think you're over thinking this. There is no carb bowl, I haven't looked at that specific bike but at most you have a little fuel rail, most should drain out when you pull the fuel line and if it has one, return line.

Just leave the fuel in and love it. My buddy left his sitting for 4 months charged the battery and it ran fine.

drain the tank and be done with it....the fuel feed operates on a pump inside the tank and pushes fuel up to the injector circuit.

The TB does not have the ability to hold gas, no bowl, ect...also, depending on what gas you are using, it is perfectly safe to leave it in. We use Renegade P98 and it has ZERO ethanol and indefinite shelf life as long as it is stored in a metal container.

You could drain out into a metal can if you want.

great bike, good luck!

Thanks for the replies. I'm sure I'm overthinking it but I'll be the first to admit I don't understand how it all works yet and I really really don't wanna do anything to hurt my 10 grand dirt bike.

you will have a higher chance of messing your bike up if you try to take it apart and drain the fuel after every ride. As stated above its fine to leave in the bike, I have never seen someone with a 4 stroke drain race gas from their bike after they ride it. I
Think we all want want what's best for our bikes but after a few months I bet you'll skip a wash and even let it sit dirty after a ride until the next one haha congrats on the new bike ride that sucker!

I have a dealer friend who short term stores bike with race gas.... he says good race gas does not turn to thick varnish type shit...... he claims up to three years and the bike will start right up.

If you're concerned about it put some Seafoam in there.

DO NOT RUN THE ENGINE TO GET THE GAS OUT AS YOU WILL FRY THE FUEL PUMP> The fuel pump is cooled by the fuel around it.

I ran my RMZ450 out of fuel probably 20 times,in the 60 hours I owned it. I know where that bike
is now,it's probably at 200 hours and still on the stock fuel pump.

Your lucky...I can't even tell you how many burnt KTM fuel pumps I have seen due to the owner running out of gas. The impellers are plastic and if they get heated up they fail. Also remember that the fuel pump on the KTM is located right above the engine and the heat from the engine along with the lack of cooling from the fuel can and will cause a pump failure.
