Hi, I just purchased a 08 yz450f that is just about brand new, only around 6 or 7 hours on it. I was just wondering what to watch out for as far as reliability issues. I have heard before that they have faulty cam chains or cam chain tensioners. Does anyone know anything about this issue? Also, I would appreciate any other advice anyone has to offer regarding the bike. Thanks a lot!

Solid bikes, my 2 riding buddies have them!, add a tooth on the rear sprocket, quick shot carb mod and a fmf megabomb, or dubach system, whole new bike!

the 08 has really mellow cams, get a set of 06's, they like to scream, makes the bike much faster. Change the oil weekly, the only problems i have seen is the eng seems to burnout in high heat situations and if you don't keep the oil clean ( clutch material) the cam side of the pistion likes to break off at the wrist pin...and the timimng chains seem to wear out quickly... these observations are from hanging around my son in law who had a deal and rode yamahas in the National Hare and Hound series for yamaha in 2006,7,8 until yamaha pulled the plug on off-road support....oh... if your riding Desert, find a 2006 rear shock and put it on your sled, it's about 3/8 of a inch shorter and makes the bike work really good in the high speed stuff.. Dr D pipes are the hot set up fpr Yz'z.. if you do what i suggested, you won't need to change gearing, the gearing changes are only needed if you don't mess with the cams.. they make huge difference!

I have no knowledge of an ' 08 , other than the fact that we ran Yamaha's for many years prior to that. In '06 we bought a yz250f, and a yz450f. Those were the first ones with the aluminum frames, and the new motor. They were the worst bikes we ever had in 10 years. They were dogs, couldn't get out of their own way. Rode the 450 6 times, and took me a year and a half to sell it,for less than half of what I paid for it. My son rode a friends 2011 450f,and liked it a lot. But don't put anything from an '06 into anything. Best bike was the '04 yz250f,and the '04 yz450f.
