Piston grenaded when i rode on the last cold day we had here need some tips on what piston to use for the rebuild. Leaning toward wiseco i can get it the cheapest but heard vertex would last longer. What are the normal hours on rings and pistons and when i should change them 15 on rings and 30 on pistion? Is flushing the bottom end as effective as splitting the cases or should i not even think about flushing the bottom out? I had the clutch in when she went so hopefully nothing fell in the botom but just to be on the safe side. Thanks guys

I used Vertex, OEM and Wiseco on that same model no difference between them for performance and durability. I was doing piston and rings at about 25 hrs, slow vet riding. I had poor result with flushing the case and had leaking crank seals after, I split cases with this type of damage now. Youtube and service manual are excellent resources, use caution if the detail you see on youtube varies too far from service manual procedure.

Split the cases if pieces broke off the piston or ring. What do you mean flushing? the crank? The "bottom end" you talk about holding in the clutch, the piston pieces, oil or whatever never come in contact with the transmission where the clutch is. If pieces came off your piston or rings, they are in your "bottom end" where the crank spins and that space is very small with a very sensitive lower rod and crank beaings.

Not to be insulting, but you know the transmission "bottom end" is not touching or connected to the crank/rod "bottom end"
