So im in the middle (or back to the beginning... thanks theifs) of my full rebuild chassis and engine and i took my airbox off to find a small crack forming at the bottom. As im well aware the 02-04 had the airbox issue, if i buy the 05-07 which is actually cheaper anyways... does it bolt right up amd does it fix the issue or will i still have to do the mxbonz kit?
In any case, if you're in there ripping apart the airbox/airboot, might as well throw on the Twin-Air or MXBonz sealing ring kit. They are absolutely necessary on those bikes. That airboot-to-airbox sealing setup was such a joke on those. Caused my crank to get ruined in my 2002 before the recall notice even showed up in the mail.
As the OP mentioned, his 03 airboot has a crack so he needs a new one anyways. Might as well just buy one that fixes the issue which would be the older one (97-01). Otherwise he has to buy another 03 and then the mxBonz kit which adds up in cost.
You end up installing the new airboot the same way you would the mxBonz kit. You have to drill out the nubs on the inside of the airbox so that you can use the screws from the older metal airboot rim. I actually have 1 at home and I was considering swapping it to replace my 03 airboot with mxbonz kit since I prefer the angled contact point of the 01 OEM airboot to the flat rim of the mxbonz kit. I also have a cr500 so sharing filters would be convenient.
