bit of a tech question yz 125 1983 are the forks compatible with 490 forks A friend is trying to fit a twin leader onto his 125 and the cleat position is different so we are wondering can we buy some 1983 fork lowers and put the 125 stanchions and internals in them or is it not that straight forward
he thinks his current forks are 43mm but are in the 125 lowers

About the brake lug. 80-81 YZ465 twin leading backing plate has a lug angle at about a 45 degree angle. If not mistaken, 82 and later had closer to a 90 degree angle. Maybe get a backing plate from a 80-81 model. Hope this helps, but it is all based on me digging around for some back in 2004. Slept since then....Laughing

I seem to recall that the 83' 125 forks were 38mm, were they not?
And the 83' 490 forks were 43mm if I'm not mistaken.

Yes, 83' 125 forks are 38 mm, but 1984' 125 are 43 mm and have a 45 degree angle....
On my 1983 yz 125 I have 1984 fork lowers with 1988 stanchions and internal cartridge...

on this bike it has 125 lowers as they fit the single leading shoe but has 43mm uppers apparently off a later model

based on this will the later cartridge forks be compatible with the earlier lowers

1988 cartridge internals are compatible with every 43 mm lowers but you have to machine the bottom of the lowers....

It wont be pre 83 legal with newer stanchions all parts must be 83 or before most yz riders have the emulators fitted

Tony
the bike has 43 mm stanchions so it may be technically illegal in pre 83 along with loads others no doubt,Ironically the bike was built for a main sponsor of pre 83 125 originally . He had been told they were 490 forks when he bought the bike

From what I have worked out they are 1984 forks from a YZ 125 ,he has bought the wrong back plate without realising that there are two types of twin leaders
With help from here and a lot of research we have worked out what he needs now

Do you have any details of the modification? I have 88, 81 and 82 forks. Smile
