What's up Jeff? This is Larry Hughes from Houston. We pitted next to each other at the Lake Whitney AMA 250 pro national in 82. We both got a bad start in the qualifier outside the top 20. We can through the pack together and finished just outside the top 10 and missed going to the moto's. I was really bummed. You came off the track super pumped because you loved the track. Don't know if you remembered that or not, but it really stuck with me for years. It taught me that its not always about what place you finished, but how much you enjoy the ride.

Zoom, was that the year where we ran all three classes in the same day and Lake Whitney was the first national of the year? If so there was 120 riders in the 250 class. I rode that national. That may have been 1981, Joe

Joe,

'81 and '82 were 125/250 nationals. '83 was a 125/250/500 national. Could have been the '81 national when Jeff and I were in the qualifier together. Here is a shot of the LCQ of the '82 250 national. Clint Hardick #64 with the holeshot, Ross Pederson from Canada on the #54. I'm on the inside of the first turn on the Honda #804.

It must have been 81 rode the national, there was like 120 riders to start with in the 250. I made to the main. There sould be a easy place to look up facts. Did you ride the ama pro qualifiers there in 1980? There was three in a row in Texas in 1980,

Joe, I think we had this conversation before... Yes, I did the 3 AMA pro qualifiers in Texas in '80. Whitney, Austin and Rio. If I'm not mistaken we met at the Oakley national sales meeting in SoCal in the early 90's. They were trying to hire me and sent me out there. At the time I was the AXO and Parts Unlimited rep in Houston. Does that sound familier?

Hi 245,

I assume TR is Tucker-Rocky? My father, Rick Hampson was the GA rep for TR from ~85 until he passed in ~97....he was top rep for TR for many years....usually in close competition with the FL rep. Funny story....one year in the early 90's, the FL rep lost total revenue to dad (and the bet they had) and had to carry him to the podium to get the award.

We partially owned, then wholly owned, Motocross Park South in Franklin GA up until the late 70's. I raced starting at age 7 in '71 thru ~'78 until they shut down...then got into hair-scrambles and enduros until I lost interest in late highschool. I remember racing against Billy Liles, Ben Bishop, David Kennedy and John Blackstock...but never made it big like most of you-guys! Those were the days... :-)

Great to hear from you, I knew your dad well, Is this David or Michael ? He help me get on with TR as Tenn. rep and when he passed away I got to come home. I know all those you spoke of. Billy and I were close, I went to school with David but didn't know him. Well. Cam Roos said hi! 245

David. Is that you Cam? You and I used to ride together and look for beer cans too! ....and you ran over me once when I fell (in front of you) while we were riding some power-lines ... back in the day :-) Send me an email so we can reminisce: dhampson@enroutenet.com

Keith Perry, though already mentioned sprays my home once a month, keeping the bugs out.

I ran into Jeff Fritz in Tijuanna FLats in Clermont a few months back.

Always fun talking moto with Tom and Keith.

Got my first bike from Woody at Honda of Orlando in '73. It was an XR 75. Those were the days.

I know, STFU Noob!!!
.Woody Powell is my uncle. Honda of Orlando sold a xr 75 name after me JHR. Jeff Hope Replica ,, Not many can claim that!! I was also sponsored By J&B racing east , Not to be confused with J& B west, Jeff Ward and Brian Meyerscough was East coast. Jeff Hope and Brian ward was west coast. I got hurt before the International race of champions at saddleback in 73 or 74? Also had a factory Hodaka ride and was a R&D rider for Dirt Squirt.I was also sponsored by Pete Aslock, he owned the property Orlando Sports Stadium. I came back to mx In 93-94 and did good locally till I overjumped the 65 foot plateau at Dade city and dislocated and broke my hip. Im still riding today but probaly wont ever race again.. too risky for me!

Hey I knew almost everyone of the riders mentioned in this discussion. A few names not mentioned yet, Dale and Pat Ellis and John Bowers, they all rode Hodakas back in the early 70's. Dale and Pat were from Deland and 1/2 Pint Bowers was from Tifton Georgia. How about Troy Bush from Iron City Georgia, that kid hauled. Then there was the Carter Brothers from Tallahassee, Phil on the YZ400, Joe on the 250, Goober on the 125 and Chris on 80's and 100's. Mark Land from Monticello was fast, he won the Georgia Florida shootout in the early 70's. In 1973 Jeff Hope was super fast on an XR75 Honda. I think that kid had bad kidneys or something. Keith Watson was another fast guy from North Florida. Wow it's so cool to remember this stuff. I once saw Kenny Keylon win a local Hare Scrambles, that guy did it all.
Buck B my kidneys were fine but I did have serious shoulder injury at nml series in bradington around that time

Jeff, that west J&B Racing stands for Jeff Ward & Brad Dutoit, remeber when they came to the winter natationals in Jacksonville in 1973, Ward had the first MR 50 we had ever seen, ever thing else they had was powder blue.
