To be honest the build quality on Kawasaki motocross bikes in the 70-80s was pretty crappy. There is a reason you don't see many examples of them in good condition. Frames cracked, electronics fail, casting were poor. 90s were better but still not on par with some of the other brands.

This is true, I have an "85" kx125 and side by side to a cr you can see Honda was built better. I think there were some kawis that for some reason didnt suffer from most known issues and equally some that wouldnt stay together no matter what. The bike I was looking at looks like it maybe a good one. I was interested in how the power delivery, suspension and just how the bike was in general. I have Honda's and I know they are solid. It just kinda cool to be on something everyone else is not.

My brother had one and I distinctly remember lots of tranny issues. Bent shift forks, shipped gears, etc. He fixed it, sold it to a local kid and the same thing happened to him.

Had a 85 Kx250, and 85 Suzuki RM250. Preferred the Suzuki, mainly because the full floater suspension, allowed to charge the whoops and float on top of them. The Kawasaki felt more powerful, little bit narrower than the Suzuki. However neither was as good Honda CR250.

Absolutely nothing wrong with an 85 kx250 trans, providing it is good to start with, or rebuilt properly, Frames only crack when people abuse them, so look it over closely by the welds first.

Good bikes for vintage if your class is 85 and earlier, although there are slightly better ones. This being said, all these bikes are getting hard to find, so if a decent one of any type comes your way and the price is right, you can't go wrong with any of them.

If you are a fast intermediate or expert, and want a few more peak rpm's, you can send it to tom morgan racing. He knows more about the kxs's of that era than any other non kawi factory mechanic.

I am racing an 86 kx250 in the intermediate vintage class, and it works xlnt for me.

NOTE - Take off the kips cover on top of the clutch cover and try to move the lever side to side. if it moves much, then the pin is broken on the lever and you will likely need to have one made then rewelded to the lever unless you get lucky and find one on ebay etc.

How might one abuse the bike to crack the frame? Come on, that is silly. Early kawasakis were built like junk

I really dislike the exhaust manifold/pipe seal on our bikes. They can blow out easy. Lose power and sound like a squid bike. I use fresh orings and a bunch of rtv. And try not to pull the pipe and break the seal. Once it's dialed, the hours you put in will be worth it
