Some of the 1983 Maico bikes originally had a nylon screw in the
clutch cover for checking the oil height. This screw is located on
the part of the forward part of the clutch cover where it covers the
crankshaft area. Not all of the bikes have this screw. If you bike
does not have this screw it will still have the dimple that was cast
into the cover indicating where the screw should be installed.
Originally Maico specified 650cc of oil in the 1983 bikes. Later (I
would suspect the same time they stopped drilling and tapping the
hole in the sidecover) they started specifing 800cc of oil. I think
there was a tech bulletin issued on the change in oil quantity
specification. The 1983 manual was not changed, but if you look at a
1985 or later manual you will see that those manuals specify 800cc in
the transmission. The motors are basically the same.
As far as the transmission, there are 3 1983 490 transmissions. FL,
FK, and D. FL and FK are four-speeds one is a close ratio and the
other is a wide ratio, and the D is a wide ratio five-speed.
You might also see some mis-stamped 250 motors with FK or FL instead
of C. I have seen two of these and they were still 5 speed bikes.
If you have the sidecover off the bike, you might want to take a die
grinder and relieve the area underneath the oil fill hole. Maico
made the clearance so tight between the cover and the clutch that it
takes seemingly forever to fill the case with oil.
My bike is a 250 and does not have the weep hole drilled. I have to become a member of that group I guess.
Another question I might ask is about the 17mm and 19mm bolts on the bottom of the case. Does the 19mm need removed when draining the oil? My can-am has both and I know removing the 19mm is a big no no on them as you will have to split the cases and re-wind the kicker gear. I was scared to touch it when draining the oil and only removed the 17.
