Dave, built some Minis for me as well.
I will let him know you have pics on the way.
Those were great days of motocross in the mini (80) ranks in the Pacific Northwest. I never beat any of those guys (except Brian Thompson and Dailey) unless they fell, but had a few scraps and great experiences beside them. But racing with them was the best memories of my life. We had our version of Southern Cal minicyle motos up here in the Northwest. At the big races we would have 20 kids on the line and those racers were amazing. There were a few other riders as well, but names ecscape me right now. Maybe somebody from the northwest will remember those glory days at Washougal, Albany, Sandy, Horn Rapids, Clarks, etc. I sure do.
AJ Whting is my dad.
He is doing really well and actually starting a MX school of his own.
He has me, who is graduating high school. Madison who is very smart and is 9. And brandon who is 6 and loves his dad more than anything in the world.
Im trying to find pictures of my dad during his racing years..if you have any will you let me know please?

Did you also cover NMA Nationals outside of So Cal? Same year, 1974: Orlando and Houston.

mxvet37- I was a reporter for the NMA and the local papers and was pretty good about saving the issues in which I had stories in. From that 1982 WMGP Kurt Henricksen finished fifth in the 105 12+ DIV#2 event. His best finish was in the 100 MOD class where he took second. Paul Denis won the ROC 80 class and took a first in the 105 RUN-OFF. Placing behind Denis in the ROC was Todd Campbell, Larry Brooks, Danny Storbeck and Art DeHoff. Oh yes, give me a chance to find the results from the 1983 race for you...
Troy Blake made the switch to Yamaha and was the major player in the 1981 World Mini Grand Prix. Not only did he win the Race of Champions but also the 83 MOD EXP 12+ RUN-OFF. I took a shot of Troy hitting a berm and Yamaha used that for a two-page race win ad in CYCLE NEWS.
Wandell- I have pictures of all of these great mini riders. Check out SOCALMXNEWS.COM and hit the blue search bar till you get to Photo ID: 101. You will see a first turn shot from the 1982 WMGP with Bruce Bunch leading Paul Denis, Rick Hemme, Larry Brooks, Robert Mason and Mike Healey.

colin karcher had the grandfather of the DMC YZs in 84, the one with so much machined billet aluminum it probably weighed less then kate moss, and euro plastic since It was white the year before we got away from the yellow/black colors.
I remember that bike at the nma qualifiers, world mini & ponca.
after those races, brandon sterling ended up with the bike, which had us all scratching our heads as he was a backmarker of the intermediate class...but everyone has an idea how that happened.
regardless, that bike was beautiful...the closest thing to a 'factory' 80, back when factory bigbikes still existed and were mostly built of unobtainium.
I went to Art's (senior, I always assumed AJ was jr.) mx school in 82. he taught me the most important thing there is....STAND UP
still remember he told us the first morning...'a motorcycle is not an armchair!'
he made us do 15 laps around the track in aqua dulce, standing up...then he started working on telling us when it was ok to sit down, which was really only when railing a burm.
there was a lot more to be taught, but I must say his school made such a big difference on all of our styles (i was a midpack 80 nov before it)
the first day, AJ showed up, also hannah met his mechanic there and I think was supposed to do some testing, but all I memember him doing was a crazy road jump with shorts on.
oh how I miss those days! I've raced most every single track in california (in the 80's), but I will be always a dunes kid at heart, and that's where I want my ashes dumped.
screw hard packed dry ass clay...give me dirt & sand!
but ascot did teach me how to go fast on barrel turns. :-P
