Finally tore into my '89 YZ125 motor last night and the clutch is pretty shagged. Minimally it needs a new basket, but probably an inner hub as well. Obviously these parts are no longer available new. I was doing research last night and the basket from '93 to current models are the same. The '89 and '93 are the same generation engine(New gen came out the next year in '94 but kept the same clutch parts), but the clutch went from 6 spring to 5 spring in '91. Anyone know if a later generation complete clutch assembly will work in my '89 engine? As a reference to the possibility, a complete new clutch assembly will fit right into the '96-'98 YZ250 engine as long as it's done as a complete assembly- I know as I have done it.
96-98 swap? Hummmm. Please tell me more
Thanks
I have a '98 YZ250, which I have put a complete '03 YZ250 clutch assembly into. As an assembly(basket, hub, pressure plate, etc..) slides right and works mint.
The 86 to 92 yz125 have the same clutch side case number 1lx (well some are black and the later ones silver)
Not sure on the side cover tho
I've often thought about if you could machine down the newer basket to the height of a 91/92 clutch basket...
Must look into that one day
