Terry Clark? Rode Kawi at that time.

First reaction was Gary Chaplin but I do not remember him riding Kawi - CZs and Maicos.

Tough question...

Looks like Tony Wynn in the nose to me, but as Rex said this is a tough one.

McQueen looks like he's sporting his late-in-life beard and perm, but that doesn't match the period, judging by the apparel(?).

At first glance looks like Billy Lilies but it's not he's too young for that to be him and I have no idea who it is, did we ask Semics who it is ?? could just be a neighbor Steve brought a long =)

let me take a guess...

Although he was mainly known for riding a Montesa. During the 1973 season, (the late) Peter Lamppu did ride for Kawaski.
I have failed to find a photograph of Peter, so please just consider this guess a long shot.

"Gary Semics" seems like a possibility, perhaps he'll personally confirm or deny this?

Possibly Trey Jorski ca. 1974-75? I thought Trey rode a lot of AMA events on a Kawasaki around that point. I thought that Kawasaki consistently put its factory riders in matching lime green pants from 1973 onward, so even if this photo shows a practice day at Saddleback or something, I'm not so sure their factory rider would wear something else. There's some blurry Youtube video of Trey racing at Mosier Valley in 1975 on Kawasaki with a Kaw jersey and what look like blue or black pants. I don't believe nylon pants really came in until 1976 or so. Kind of surprising if this is Trey and we haven't already heard from someone who recognized him, though.

Not me. Way to early for Liles and I don't think its Semics.

Personally I'm thinking the mystery rider is too young to have been Pampu.

Jimmie, I failed to credit the Pinterest user from where I lifted that image, so it's high time I did:

Your question as to if that's McQueen is one worth raising, maybe robkinuk can provide his image source. McQ is my favorite actor, always will be, and to me it does look like him. He was able to let himself go, which he seems to have done when the pic was taken, but I don't recall any of those periods matching up with the early-mid 70's, which is my guess for the era of the pic.

A few examples of a rattier King of Cool:

The lower half of his gear in the image in question matches what he wore in the Elsinore ad pretty well, but who didn't look like that in those days? I couldn't find any of those ad images that provided boot detail.

In sum, anyone's guess is as good as mine.Huh

BTW, anyone interested in Steve McQueen, I'm reading a biography about him and I'd highly recommend it. Not sure if it is going to mention anything about "On Any Sunday" though. Maybe I haven't read far enough yet. RIDE ON !!!

John,

I've read one bio on Steve (dunno how many are out there) and recall it being rewarding. I don't recall mention of On Any Sunday but that doesn't mean much (aging brain). I do recall an amusing section about him being James Garner's neighbor and thing's he'd do to get Garner's goat.

There's great insight on Steve's nature in his philanthropic practices with boy's homes, and also his insistence of Mert Lawwill seeing a specialist to get his hand rebuilt after being told he'd never use it again after a crash, at Steve's expense. Mert's hand was rebuilt to functionality.

#33, that was a great guess and I'd forgot about Wyman. I'm no better than any average Joe at determining resemblance, but here's a Wyman pic; I'll leave the interpretation up to y'all!

I started my research with McQueen, when did he get hippized. It was around '72-'73, the movie he did with his future wife, I think it's called The Getaway. I checked out the different Kaw riders of that period, a couple already mentioned here, plus Jim Cook and Thorlief Hanson, even Lackey, but that's obviously not him. A lot of us guys from that era who just missed the draft/Vietnam, let our hair grow because the girls liked it. I drew the line though with the bell bottom and fluffy shirt stuff. So looking at a couple pictures of Wymans facial features and imagining him with longer hair, it could be a possibility. Several riders from Texas were making a smash in professional MX at this time, Gaylon Mosier, Jody Weisel and of course Wyman.
