I've been playing around with collecting Vintage gear. I picked up an NOS electro. that one I'm sure is NOS not a repro. The other stuff not so sure (Lesson learned the hard way). Anyhow I have no clue about this stuff. if I had the Electro painted like the old DG helmets will it take away from the value? does the NOS lid even have value? It has the tags still attached and I have the box.
What I'd like to do with it
Or paint my old lid which I'd rather not as it has sentimental value to me

Get another lid to do the DG one, which is another cool idea.
I have a NOS JT ALS2 painted in Bailey 86 style and it is well worth it to me. It sits inside the house and gets shown occasionally with my 1986 CR250 Bailey replica and draws lots more attention than a stocker.
Don't think that you are going to pay off your mortgage with the proceeds of the sale of the helmet.
Just go for it. (in my opinion) Just make sure you use a good painter, I've heard Terry Hunter is good at this stuff.
Now you have to find a half decent helmet that isn't rotten inside and is worth the money to paint.
For me it was a no brainer with the Bailey JT helmet. I have a second NOS one which I will get painted one day as a 1986 MXdN replica to go with my 1986 CR500 that is in progress.
Good luck finding the helmet and show it to us when it is done, we all love that sort of stuff!

About that DG paint scheme, a friend of mine gave me an old original DG KRW lid. It's rough as shit, but it's an original. I'm sure there were several different layouts but here is one to compare.
Paint it up to look like your favorite riders from back in the day. Or like me have Hunter Designs do this nugget to really make the old lid look good.
Or like this old Electro Pro Series helmet. 1964 ISDE Steve McQueen lid.
When the Electro wore out, the Bell Mag III that replaced it felt like a tin bucket on my head compared to the Electro.
