I looked at pictures in add. Holy crap they put a bicycle goose neck into the steam. Someone actually put some work into doing that to that bike. Custom sidemolding on the tank is a nice touch.
Hey, skateboard wheels were the superior rollers in 1978, if you were fabricating your own passive tensioner, which could be crucial if you wanted to keep the chain on an early long-travel bike. It actually still bothers me that the skate shop only had yellow ones when I needed to put one on a red bike, so that Craigslist picture is even more of a flashback.
And going to get one while reviving a vintage bike when I was about thirty, and the kid on the counter asking, "You skate?!"
I never thought there would be so many ways of finding out that I'm old.
Hope the Maico cottage industry can save that 440--I'd love to have a 74.5 GP 440 myself.
It looks like the sort of "project" that one of those man bunned and trendily bearded, with a pack of ciggies tucked into their T shirt sleeve hipsters would think up. To then find it deeply unpleasant to ride.
Hopefully it gets returned to it's intended use - Roosting.
Ok this is no joke, my buddy actually purchased this bike! Paid 300 bucks to ship it from Michigan to Long Island, he just told me about it today at the shop I work at, I said I seen the bike on vital he said yup I bought it! he's gonna restore it and make it a street legal maico

Hopefully it's gone to a good home, to be brought back to full dirt use - and that, for me, includes a plate on a bike.

Yeah, I used a skateboard wheel tensioner on my RM 125. I got the thing from Al Baker R&D and it always worked great.
Good job really that the obviously skilled modifier/ mechanic didn't use his apparent skills on yet even more of the bike..
Engine looks reasonably original and unmessed, other than filter box missing.
I think it maybe looks abit worse than it actually is... hopefully...
Flimsy Alloy bicycle handlebars unreal... the things that people do! As already mentioned; would think fitting those was more work than fitting a proper steel set of bars or aftermarket replacement.
Looking beyond the bodge up, is a kind of cool 70's bike. Used to be quite alot of Maicos over here in the 70's-80's. Getting old now- as everything is... !!

Barely street legal is what it's all about.
