So the last photo the rider has 56s on his helmet. Not doubting the post, but wasn't 56s Tommy Croft?
Way cool photos....

You're probably correct. The photo was not labeled. I did not look at helmet number. I looked at the style, Era, full face mask like Smith wore and figured it was him. Croft fits all those same factors.

Bob Elliott #626 and Gary Ogden #459 on the Suzuki's in the first pic. I was at Sunshine Speedway in '77 for the 500 national when the AMA stripped Gary of the overall win in the 125 support class. He stopped a few yards from the finish line, and gave his mechanic a ride to the checkered flag.

The AMA deemed this as a rule infraction. Not long after, Gary broke his leg badly, and never regained the form he once had.

Poor Bob is another tragic story for another time.

Yep. I originally found and posted this photo from my phone. (Small screen) And I did not see the caption. Y'all are correct. Caption corrected. Not the first time in my life I've been wrong.

Scott, I was there also . A friend of mine and I were walking through the back section off the track that headed East toward the canal. Eventual winner , Croft, had caught a lapped rider in the S turn right in front of us. We couldn't get over the fact that after 1 and 3/4 motos on an open class bike, Tommy still had the wind left to yell "HEY" at the top of his lungs and scare the guy out of his way. We laughed all the way home.
