I grew up with Jim and Paul Turner, Redwood City, CA. I wanted to be as good as Jim. He rode Trans-AM's, Nationals, Two time Canadian champ for Suzuki in the 70's. I loved the way he would just throw around his CZ's. Paul became a Team Honda mechanic, and founded RockShox company, with Keith Bontrager, and Steve Simons. Bontrager used to build my 125 engines, in the late 70's. Learned his craft from Erv Kanamoto. It was good to grow up with fast riders.

Wow. Paul became a Team Honda mechanic? That guy was fun to hang with. Have you ever let him drive you anywhere? It's an amazing experience. I don't remember how, but once I ended up riding in his van coming over the hill from Santa Cruz on Highway 17. If there is a record time from Santa Cruz to Los Gatos, I'm sure Paul has it in an old POS Ford van.
You're right. We know some of the same people. I worked with Paul at Protopipe. Keith had a little hole in the back where he did some motor work. If I remember, Keith worked a deal out with Erv to market engine work under the name Kanamoto Racing.
The first time I saw DeCoster ride was at the only Inter-am he ever raced in, Mid-Ohio 1974. He was so smooth and fast, it was almost surreal to watch.

Good God! Was somebody trying to kill you?
Do you remember the big crash the Monte took a St. Pete and knocked out nearly half of his teeth?

Yaeh must have been 75 or so was'nt it? He picked it up and went on to win the moto, I beleive. It was on the jump they named after him, McCoy's mountain.
remember the announcer said it looked like he was wearing lipstick. MOFU ruled.

I believe it was 75, and if I remember right... Bill West paid to have his teeth fixed.
Then Monte move to Ca. in 76 not long after the Daytona SX that year when he won the 500cc support class.

Next bike was a 125 honda elsinore. What a great bike and I was so much faster and Healthier " title="Laughing">
That could be him... After he left Florida, you would see a pic of him pop up every now and then in MXA.
