I grew up with Jim and Paul Turner, Redwood City, CA. I wanted to be as good as Jim. He rode Trans-AM's, Nationals, Two time Canadian champ for Suzuki in the 70's. I loved the way he would just throw around his CZ's. Paul became a Team Honda mechanic, and founded RockShox company, with Keith Bontrager, and Steve Simons. Bontrager used to build my 125 engines, in the late 70's. Learned his craft from Erv Kanamoto. It was good to grow up with fast riders.

Marty Smith! First is was Brad Lackey after seeing him in a Winter-AMA, then it was Roger D after watching him at a Trans AMA in Orlando. In '74, I watched Marty Smith duel with Kent Howerton in the Support class in Orlando at the Trans-AMA race. I just really liked Marty's style.

Wow. Paul became a Team Honda mechanic? That guy was fun to hang with. Have you ever let him drive you anywhere? It's an amazing experience. I don't remember how, but once I ended up riding in his van coming over the hill from Santa Cruz on Highway 17. If there is a record time from Santa Cruz to Los Gatos, I'm sure Paul has it in an old POS Ford van.

You're right. We know some of the same people. I worked with Paul at Protopipe. Keith had a little hole in the back where he did some motor work. If I remember, Keith worked a deal out with Erv to market engine work under the name Kanamoto Racing.

Bob Hannah's style was probably the one I admired the most. I have seen him come from last to first soo many times. I have never seen anybody like that before or since.

The first time I saw DeCoster ride was at the only Inter-am he ever raced in, Mid-Ohio 1974. He was so smooth and fast, it was almost surreal to watch.

Paul made bank with his company RockShox. Lives in Colorado, has a bike company named Maverick Bikes. Sold a patent design to some of the major bike companys. Rear suspension design. I hung out at fox in 1974, just when Geoff and Bob Fox were starting up the company. Mcglincy Lane in Campbell, Ca.Trickster, remember Dave Robinson , built pipes in the bldg. behind Fox. Was that Protopipe? Fox helped me with clothing for the Nationals. Still have alot of the old Fox gear. Yep, Kanamoto Racing was the name. Fast 125's, zero longevity. Blew up alot of Suzuki's. Ya Bobbym, he had his race shop in Santa Cruz. I still see Billy Grossi on job sites doing tile work. Chas Halcomb was smooooth! Little brother got into drugs. The Santa Cruz boys are still around. Bobby, remember Dennis Stapleton? That is his kid riding the Nationals , Little Dennis. Now he rides Cross Country races, some test riding for some magazines. Sorry about the long post.

Hannah. He lived down the street from me when I was a kid and was really the first guy I ever saw that could ride fast. I never studied his style till later but did watch him ride kick-ass high speed wheelies down the street and studied fresh berms he built without the aid of a shovel.

I admired all the styles, don't think I copied anyone in particular, like the cornering of Mike Bell, the jumping of O'Show, Hannah & Bailey, the smoothness of Howerton, the badness of Barnett etc, etc..

Here's me in 82'

Do you remember the big crash the Monte took a St. Pete and knocked out nearly half of his teeth?

Yaeh must have been 75 or so was'nt it? He picked it up and went on to win the moto, I beleive. It was on the jump they named after him, McCoy's mountain.
remember the announcer said it looked like he was wearing lipstick. MOFU ruled.

I believe it was 75, and if I remember right... Bill West paid to have his teeth fixed.

Then Monte move to Ca. in 76 not long after the Daytona SX that year when he won the 500cc support class.

Hey I was young (did I mention nuts) in high School and people I rode with where racing the open class so I thought this is the bike and bought it with money i had send aside for my first car. Parents not thrilled.

Next bike was a 125 honda elsinore. What a great bike and I was so much faster and Healthier " title="Laughing">

That could be him... After he left Florida, you would see a pic of him pop up every now and then in MXA.

Saw Monte run Hannah so hard he got he digit from the hurricane. Big, back of the pack , whatever. He was one of Florida's early national campaigners .
