Mine suck, totally sagged out. I'm thinking of putting some late 1980's Honda forks on it and using the caliper mounts to hold a drum brake backing plate stay. Or should I do a Race Tech setup?

How about throwing some USD forks on it and making a Brad Lackey replica?

Race tech gold valve, and install new springs, I run this set-up on my 465/540 bike. Works great! Just as good as my new Honda

I'd just get a set of new springs and be done with it, keep it original.
Put the Honda forks on it, it's a frankenstein bike, a bitsa, just another parts bike made from parts...............

The race tech emulators will work great in your stock forks, when combined with the proper spring rate for your weight. If you have an '81 with 38mm forks, RT has lots of spring rates available. The spring choices are more limited if you have a '82 with 43mm forks. RT only offers .46kg front springs for that bike, which is good for a 200lb rider.

I'll try the Race Tech springs first. I'm over 200lbs with gear. Thanks.

If you want good fork action, get the emulators too.

+1 for Emulators, I've run them in several bikes.

Ive seen where 86+ Honda cartridge uppers are fit to 82 ,83 lowers to use the drum brake. It wouldn't hurt to go with Honda front brakes too. I don't think I had or rode a rm with what I would call a good front brake

Still cheaper and less headaches to use emulators. For vintage racing you're only talking about 5 laps anyway.

You can't run disc brakes or cartridge forks in the post vintage classes.

I have 43mm '84 RM250 forks with dual leading shoe brakes on my '82 RM and the brakes are excellent. Install stiffer springs with emulators and that's the best class legal setup you'll find.

That is me(in the air) on a 1983 XR200R with 35mm forks (only 10" travel), Race Tech Springs, Emulators, and fluid. I weigh about 230 with gear on and the forks soaked up this landing without any trouble.
