Question for any RM465/500 engine experts

The later open class RMs are still, in my view, the best-sounding production bikes ever, beaten only by an RC500 Honda. Why did they sound so good? What was it about their engine design/porting that created that unique sound? It must have been something. Any ideas?

A friend that has several RM465's and 500's swears its the stock pipe/silencer combo. He's tried a few aftermarket pipes and silencers and says its the stock pipe & silencer give it that unique sound.
