Sachs and I'm very envious of you. I'm just starting a replica of the few Sachs factory bikes that were here in the US. I have to use a Sachs/Hercules frame and do major modifications. You picture will come in handy.
Great job! please keep pictures coming as your project progress's

PN 27416 , you right! is a Sachs MC 250 US- model. the original german model have a silver frame with blue plastics. it´s very interesting to here that you build a replica of this bike.
I bought long time bevor a Hercules GS 250 ( enduro-model) with a 5speed engine. the GS model have original a 7speed engine. the 5 speed was used in the MX models. good luck for me, because the 5 speed gearboxes are very rare. so I removed the 5speeder from the GS and rebuild it. together with the frame I had a good base for my dreambike.

7 speed:

SWM using Rotax engines, sold in US under the name Bombardier. maybe the early bikes have Sachs, but I´m not sure. the Rotax was a very popular engine here in Europe. lot of companys used this. my Kramer ER 250 have a Rotax rotary disc valve.

next step was to build a fork. remeber, I bought only the frame/swingarm. a original fork was not to be received . I want use this bike here in germany for competition, so I need a good fork with a good breake. Honda CR 250 fork with 38mm and a duplex drumbreake will be nice.

and the rules here for competition are not so strict. together with a set of rebuild FoxAirShox, the bike look´s fantastic, or?

Heck, the bike looks great, that is trick!
Motor also. These transmissions confused me at first. I knew they had 5 and 7 speeds then I opened up my engine up and saw 4 gears per shaft and was baffled. Now I understand.
I'm sticking with 35mm forks I think, I found some longer ones and have Fox airs to use as well. I will have to have a custom pipe made. Are the gas tanks like yours available there in Germany? I have not found one here yet and was trying ebay Germany.

Great project! And I thought my 2 Cagiva's were a lot of work. I'm not sure of the year but I have a few pictures of a Sachs that I took at the Primm Museum a few years ago. Andy Stacy was with me and he was pretty sure this was the factory Sachs his brother Frank raced..

yeah, the transmission is a bit different or? there is a other axle below. the needle-bearings of this axle are always scrap! check this befor you assemble the engine.
a friend of mine build by hand a very nice pipe. pic´s later. the gastank is a Hoss Industrie piece. made in america. I think it´s easier to find one in US than in germany. but if you can´t find one, i will have a look for you here.

oh my god, you know the Stacy brother´s? Frank was the only one worksracer for Sachs in US. must be in 1978. Trans AMA, or? the bike is a bit different to the production bikes. the plastics are from Hoss, rearwheel from the GS-models. handmade alu-airbox, pipe and the shocks also not stock. nice bike.you have more pic´s?

Yes, that sounds right. I believe Frank raced for Sachs in '78 for the Trans AMA series. We saw this bike at the museum...Andy said he remembered Frank building the guard for the pipe in their workshop. I have no idea if this is the real works bike. This is the only other picture I have.

you are right man! my mistake. 1978 was the yaer of production here in germany. Stacy´s 1977 bike was a pre-production bike.

today I see that I never finish this topic. sorry guys, sometimes I´m a lazy bastard ;-). was a hard project for me, but I´m very happy to finish the bike and enjoy the ride!
remember, I starting only with a frame. so I have to build a airbox. build a dummy from cardboard.

first one was from aluminium, but I wasn´t happy with this thing.

second one from glasfibre

Maybe it's me but the aluminum air box you made looks great to me.
How do you mod the Fiberglas into the shape you needed ?

the aluminium airbox was a bit to small, the filter dosn´t fit. was to complicated to change the design, so it was much more better to build a airbox from glasfibre. I use aluminium-mesh to create the right shape of the airbox and cover it with glasfibre, inside and outside. now I can use a bigger, modern slip-on airfilter.

now more pics from the bike for you:

tomorrow more ;-)

Sick!

That's what I love about the 70's stuff. You can make alot of parts yourself and not need a CNC to do it.

engine power is great, much torque in low refs, much power in high. but the Fox Shocks are to long and create massive problems. I tried Corte&Cosso shocks, but wasn´t better. my latest update was a set of Öhlins, fresh rebuildet by self and now I´m happy! after the first mudrace I was a littlebit crying, but it´s ok for me. racebikes are made for racing, not for showrooms :-)

What a neat bike. I am old enough to remember seeing 1 or 2 of these on the track. Is it hard to start?

BTW I have a big Sachs-Dolmar chainsaw. It is absolutely badass too.
