Hi all,
I am in the process of restoring an 84 Maico/M-Star and am desirous of having the tank refinished. It is in good shape with no gouges or deep scratches so mostly will need cleaning and polishing imo. Looking for recomendations to have this done professionally or in -home garage solutions that I may pursue myself. Also seeking correct side panels for this machine and have only come up with the DC plastic ones which are matte finish and not my first preference. Ive tried socal maico and koestler to no avail so far , will consider used originals in good shape if anyone has some out there. As a last ditch alternative I think the 83 panels will work but arent the right ones for it so not sure where this will lead,
Thanks for your time and input..

Recently restored my 91 CR125 tank and airbox following this process https://youtu.be/yWPwCXLSIdA

It was a lot of hard work and finished with fine plastic polishing finishing compound on a felt polishing wheel and then polished with a dry soft felt polishing wheel.

Result was ok as you will see below tank pic, but wouldn't fancy having to do it again.

I use laquer thinner with boiled linseed oil in it. The thinner smooths the plastic while the linseed oil adds a shine. I just use a fine scotch bright pad or fine steel wool. This was my latest job.

If you don’t have any heavy gouges or any serious fading I would be hesitant to sand on it because sanding in steps is an art that takes patience. The thinner and linseed oil works great for light wear plastics. Look it up on youtube. Plenty of examples.

The sanding route looks like more than I want to do myself ...I'll try the laquer thinner and linseed oil and see how that works. thanks for the tips and photos fellas.
